Brattleboro Census Response Rate

OtherHave you filled out your 2010 Census form and sent it back in? I did. Over a week ago.

I also got another 2010 Census form in the mail today, identicle to the first. I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do with this new one.

There is a new map that shows how well different areas of the country are responding so far. It's a measure of what they call the "Mail Participation Rate," which is the percentage of forms mailed back by households that received them.

Today, nationally, the participation rate is at 52%. In Vermont participation is at 51%.

...

The map allows for searches by zipcode. Here's how the Brattleboro area compares at the beginning of April:

South of town, Guilford - 61%

West of Living Memorial Park - 59%

Keene 56%

North of town, Dummerston - 55%

East of Living Memorial Park - 53%

As of today, I have received nothing concerning the census. I have a post office box and I've heard a rumor that folks with a box have been overlooked. Has anyone else had this experience?

Forms were not sent to PO Box holders. We have to wait for a census taker to show up at our door. It has something to do with wanting a GPS location for everyone who responds. It seems to me that they could have just asked for a physical address and send the form to a PO box.

Since this is only done once each decade, they try to reinvent it each time. By the time they get it right, we'll all be dead. Well, perhaps not all of us, but I will be.

Our form(s) have barcodes to help identify us, and came to the mailbox
    on the house.

P.O. boxes don't get census forms. They will physically deliver it to your house, or send an interviewer. I believe there are also places you can go to fill it out, but I don't know about around here.

I get my mail at general delivery. My census form arrived at the muddy
bottom of my (then) still snow-covered driveway - in a plastic bag,
fortunately. All filled in & sent back.

Got mine; sent it in. Last time I was selected for follow-up. I wonder if the same guy's doing it this time.

    Chris,
I think this is the long awaited opportunity to develop that alter ego of yours. Let your wild side out! Mr Hyde was just as important as Dr. Jeckyll. He may never have this opportunity to stand up and be counted again. Your anima is screaming at you "Let me live, too! I'm real, I'm real I tell you!" Can't you hear her? Unless you learn the neocon tricks for rigging electronic voting machines you'll never again have a chance to sway a vote, er, I mean survey.

    Fill Out The Census Coreectly.

I hope that those here took the oppurtunity to fill out the census correctly. Answering correctly means constitutionally. That would be stating how many paople live in your household, that's it, nothing else. No phone number. income status, marital status, which means nothing in Vermont anyways, and whether you rent or own your house.

The census' only constitutional purpose is to count the population in each state for the sole purpose of representation. That's it. Not for the reason you hear the ads on the radio. Like funding for your town and getting porkfat for your roads and schools.

Wasn't Calvin Coolidge from Vermont? Boy you'd never know it looking at Vermont today.

It's pretty obvious from your statement that you need to stop listening to your right wing pundits and Michelle Bachman. It's also obvious that you haven't looked at the census form. It doesn't ask marital status, income or any of the other things you listed. It's just an inquiry into how many people live in your house and ethnic background. That's it, no questions about any of those other items.

Couldn't play it my youtube is on the fritz. But judging from the comments did they say that because they're a married gay couple so it's important to fill out the census and be counted.

MAN I missed the part about marital status and sexual orientation. What the heck did I fill out?

This is just crazy all these people talking, with authority, about something they apparently haven't even seen....................
we have become a nation of idiots

If there is a second adult in your household, you check off that person's relationship to the first adult in the household. If you are married, you check "husband or wife."

The movie tiny mentions shows Takei and his husband (who ARE legally married) talking about how if you are married, you should check "spouse" for the second adult even if you are gay. They say the census Bureau wants you to do this even if you do not have an official marriage license from your state. This is confirmed by a Census Bureau spokesman in this NYT article:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/21/us/21census.html

Too bad you can't watch it, because it's very sweet. Maybe you just need to update your browser.

I went to feed the chooks this morning, one of the hens, "#7", had a
little chick peeping away. Day 21, hatchday, 6 more eggs to go!

The first thing that came to mind was I didn't know if to include it in my
cencus. And the second thing was, yahoo, a little bit of spring is here.
Happy Passover and Happy Easter to all.

As you "prefer not to receive e-mails," I will answer even though this has gotten really, really off topic that we ordered two packages of new bees that will arrive just in time to miss the locust bloom. :(

Have you ever wondered how anything so absolutely adorable and cute and fluffy could turn into a chicken???????
It's not that I don't like chickens, especially medium rare (or was that children....."stolen from WCFields, the line being don't you like children, the answer being yeeeeeees, medium rare, anyway it's just that the transition from little peeper to chicken seems to be one of the most dramatic of the animal world.....excepting for my own personal baby pictures and what I've become but that's another story. Sorry I'm just in an odd mood today, very off topic and I'll go rake some leaves or something now.

Well I DID say I was confused.......I have my second form here which came in the mail, I'll go see if there's still that husband/wife thing on there but I don't remember it but then I DID say I was confused. What about income???????? Did I miss that one too??????? Will I be arrested for improperly filling out the form?

Well the sound you hear is me eating my hat because Mike was partly correct. I must have filled this out in such a rush, I hope I did fill in the name section because I'm not sure I did. But yes, it does have a spouse section Mike you were right. But I still don't see the income check off. (Star Trek pun intended and yes, I know he was Zulu but couldn't think of a pun for Zulu). Now I am worried, will I be arrested and thrown in jail for not telling them my income?

I suspect the income info is on the "long form," which they send census takers around to collect. It is much more extensive, and I don't think the legal penalties for not responding apply.

Coreectly indeed. That's exactly what I did, but then I was afraid to give it to the mailman. He's a gummit employee, you know, so you can't trust him. Plus, I was afraid I may have left some trace of DNA somwhere on the form, and I don't want the gummit to have that on file. They might clone me to get the answers. So I figured I'd wait until the census worker comes out to the compound. I'll shout my name, rank, and serial number at him before I run him off the grounds with my Constitutional right to brandish firearms. They aren't going to get any voluntary information out of me until their thugs pry it out of my cold, dead fingers.

Oh, by the way, GOD BLESS AMERICA! SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! AMERICA, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!

I mailed mine within 3 days of receiving it and still received a new one today. Even if they hadn't recorded our information, you would think they could have registered that our barcode had been returned.

My read that the warning letter ("You will be getting your census form shortly") cost something like $55 million. And now they have sent 2 forms to every house in the country?

Yeah, I was momentarily thrown off upon finding another mailing from the Census today, as I'd sent in my response a couple weeks (or longer) ago. Kept checking the (recipient) address (mine) & wondering if I'd gotten the previous one by accident, or what...

The enclosed note says, in part:
"It is important that each household respond only once. If you have already provided your census information, we thank you-there is no need to provide it again."
They should've put that in larger print. Well, ideally, the forms wouldn't be sent out again to those who've completed & returned them.

Reminds me of letters from magazines asking you to re-subscribe, whether or not one has already done so. Gives me sense (not intellectual, just a feeling) that nobody's monitoring feedback (paying attention at other end of correspondence).

According to a statistic on a tv show, South Dakota is thus far the state with highest Census form response rate, at 62%.
