August Events @ The Book Cellar & Bartleby's Books
    Monday, August 09 2010 @ 09:04 AM GMT+5
    Contributed by: BookCellar

BooksIn case you haven't noticed, the author event schedules at The Book Cellar in Brattleboro and our sister store Bartleby's Books in Wilmington are growing. We're working hard to put together events with authors from near and far that will interest and engage the many, many readers in our communities. If you haven't been in for awhile, come check us out.

The Book Cellar has been an independent bookselling institution in Brattleboro for over 60 years, and Bartleby's, while a little bit younger (est. 1989), retains the same commitment to books and neighbors.

Though we've been around awhile, we know that times do change and in addition to our stores we also offer our full catalog (& then some) of books for purchase 24/7 online - www.bookcellarvt.com or www.bartlebysvt.com. You can have them shipped directly to you or order online and come in to pick them up.

    Book Cellar Events:

A History of Heaven: Newsweek Religion Editor Lisa Miller
    Thursday, August 12th @ 7pm
    The Book Cellar, Brattleboro

What is heaven? Eighty percent of Americans say they believe in heaven, yet very few of them can articulate anything specific about their belief. Numerous questions surrounding the concept of heaven have existed for ages, and Americans continue to grapple with these ideas. In her new book, Heaven: Our Enduring Fascination with the Afterlife, Newsweek Religion editor Lisa Miller provides a groundbreaking history of the afterlife and offers a new understanding of this cherished spiritual ideal.

Madcap Adventures with Novelist Matthew Dicks
    Thursday, August 19th @ 7pm
    The Book Cellar, Brattleboro

Matthew Dicks has created a genre for himself as the go-to guy for the loveable-loser brand of neurotic humor: a mix between the immensely popular television show Monk and Woody Allen with a dash of Nick Hornby. His newest novel, Unexpectedly, Milo, is a hilarious and sneakily profound tale about a man whose behavior is truly odd, while being oddly relatable. When our neurotic but good-natured protagonist, Milo, stumbles upon a video confessional detailing a decade-old disappearance of a young girl, he sets off on a madcap journey to crack the case and winds up finding himself in the process.

    Bartleby's Books Events:

Book signing with Wilmington Authors Laura Stevenson & F.D. Reeve
Friday, August 13th from 4-6pm (during Old Home Week Stroll)
    Bartleby’s Books, Wilmington

Marlboro College Professor Laura Stevenson and her husband, poet & novelist F.D. Reeve will be in the store signing copies of their new books. Stevenson’s novel, Return In Kind, explores the loss and the meaning of value while delivering a drama-filled mystery and blossoming romance. Reeve’s 10th poetry collection, The Puzzle Master, contains elegant short lyrics & a long dramatic reworking of the Icarus-Daedalus myth.

Lost Ski Areas of Southern Vermont
Discussion & Signing with Jeremy Davis
    Saturday, August 28th @ 4pm
    Bartleby's Books, Wilmington

Hidden amongst the hills and mountains of southern Vermont are the remnants of sixty former ski areas, their slopes returning to forest and their lifts decaying. Today, only fourteen remain open and active in southern Vermont. Though they offer some incredible skiing, most lack the intimate, local feel of these lost ski trails. From the family operated Hogback in Windham County to Clinton Gilbert's farm in Woodstock, where the very first rope tow began operation in the winter of 1934, these once popular ski areas left an indelible trace on the hearts of their communities and the history of southern Vermont.

    Hope to see you soon!

Congrats on your (and all bookstores downtown) mention in the Boston Globe's "Creative Type" blog.

Delia Cabe, the author, says: "An afternoon spent in downtown Brattleboro, Vermont, is like a few hours in a time warp. ...The best part of this time warp: several independent bookstores within several blocks of each other. On Monday, I visited four of them, all have their own niche."

It would be great if people from Bratt would take the time to travel to Bartleby's in Wilmington for the book signing with Laura Stevenson and FD Reeve on Friday.

I have to admit to being completely prejudiced, since Laura Stevenson was my college English professor, and I think FD Reeve is one of the best, and most underappreciated poets of the age. (For one reason, because his poetry is "serious" enough for those who appreciate poetry, and yet accessible to literary lunkheads like me.) And they're both just nice people, too.
I recently read Stevenson's novel "Return in Kind" and, without going into detail about the book, let me just say it was hard to put down. I haven't had the chance to read Reeve's latest collection, but I'll be there on Friday to pick up my copy.

If the 20-odd miles to Wilmington seems a long drive (or bus ride) to buy a couple of books and have them signed by the authors, there will also be a lot of other activities going on at the same time. It's Wilmington's Old Home Week and there will be activities and events throughout the day. Bartleby's is in the village, and will be right in the middle of all the music and merry-making on Friday afternoon and evening. And you don't have to be from Wilmington to join in the fun. Check out www.OldHomeWeek2010.com to see what's going on.
