The Brooks Memorial Library has added Mango, an interactive language learning program, to its online resources collection. Mango offers basic and intermediate language courses in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, plus basic instruction in thirteen additional languages, such as Arabic, Hindi, Irish, Korean, Pashto, and Tagalog. ESL courses are also included, with in-depth English instruction for native speakers of Spanish, Polish, and Portuguese, plus basic instruction for native speakers of many other languages.
Mango is available to all library cardholders. To find it, click on the Resources button on the Library’s website and look for the Language Learning link. Mango will prompt you for your library card number and will take you to a screen where you have two options for how to proceed. If you choose “Start Learning,” you can jump right in to the course of your choice. If you choose “Create a Profile,” you can set up an account that will allow you to track your progress through a series of lessons.
Vermont libraries are able to subscribe to Mango at a discount through the Green Mountain Library consortium, the same group that made downloadable audiobooks a reality for library patrons all over the state. If you have questions, please call the Library reference desk at (802) 254-5290 x109. - Jeanne Walsh, Reference Librarian
