New Farmers’ Market in Putney
Grand Opening Sunday, September 5th
Carol Brown Way, (next to Putney Food Co-op) Putney, VT, 05346
11am – 2pm (Rain or Shine)
Building on its extraordinary success at motivating and uniting the local community, Transition Putney is launching a full-scale farmers’ market across from the Putney Food Co-op on Carol Brown Way. The Sunday morning market will run until October 10th this harvest season and re-open next May. Hours are 11am to 2pm –rain or shine. Local artisans, craftspeople and food vendors will join Putney area farmers in presenting some of the very best the area has to offer. There will be live music every week and there’s plenty of easy parking.
As a community project of Transition Putney, the market’s mission is to support local agriculture by providing a viable direct market outlet for local products, while building community and enhancing regional sustainability. It also offers a wonderful opportunity to support the economy of your own community, meet and greet your neighbors while shopping for good things to eat and own —and have a lot of fun, all at the same time!
In less than a full year, Transition Putney has pooled the talents, interests and skills of scores of people in the region and launched an extraordinary campaign of cooperative and educational efforts. Their website, at http://transition.putney.net, has a Local Farm Directory, a Calendar of Events and a growing list of Recommended Reading. Their Reskilling Workshops, held twice monthly, cover everything from creating a root cellar, to making sauerkraut, to raising chickens, to bicycle maintenance —they’ll even teach you how to make a composting toilet. They hold seasonal “Locavore” potluck dinners, a monthly “Pub Night” gathering at J.D. McCliment's Pub, and host an important film and speaker series, usually held at the Putney Library. The groundswell of support and enthusiasm the group’s efforts have inspired also led to the organization of Putney’s second community garden (the first is at Putney Central School). There are 20 garden plots for garden members, plus one given to The Vermont Foodbank, and one to the Putney Food Shelf. Ground was broken this past June and already this year’s gardens are flourishing. The garden is just beside the Market area so you can check out the garden when you visit the Farmers’ Market. Join your neighbors and friends and have a look at all that’s happening these days in Putney!
