Creamery Bridge Without a Name Now Open
    Thursday, September 02 2010 @ 11:16 AM GMT+5
    Contributed by: cgrotke

    Town News

The new bridge over the Whetstone near the old Creamery Bridge is now open for traffic.

Director of Public Works Steve Barrett was pleased with the new bridge.

The new lanes are narrow, and drivers are cautioned to go slowly. There are new speed limit signs and places to stop.

New postcard views of the covered bridge available to photographers.

At noon, Police Chief Wrinn removed the barriers to allow the first vehicle - a Brattleboro Fire Truck - to cross.

In Thailand, they sometimes use elephants to demonstrate the strength of a new bridge. In Brattleboro, we use Fire Trucks. Our little cars should have no problems.

In addition to the new bridge, there is now new parking for the Farmers Market, and the covered Creamery Bridge has new granite blocks indicating that it is now officially off limits to cars. The garden club has also been working to landscape the area and has created a pleasant sitting area. They are selling stones for the garden to help cover the costs.

The Creamery Bridge looks good from this side.

The first non-fire truck across was an SUV type vehicle driven by someone named Steve (I think that's what he yelled). This photo shows the first car to drive BOTH ways over the new bridge. That's Ian Kiehle and his daughter during their first pass. Ian has the self-proclaimed honor of being the first to make an illegal turn to come back over, too.

So, Steve Barrett and the Town of Brattleboro welcome you to use the new bridge and urge you to pay close attention to the changes - narrow lanes, stop signs, and so on.

Take it slow, enjoy the view, and think of a name for this bridge while you cross.

Speaking of Thailand and Fire Trucks, take a look at the picture below. If our Fire Dept. had one of those bad boy’s and there was a car fire on Main Street, we could have a fireman on the scene and have the fire out before the Fire Truck even got out of the station.

Work your way up to Fire Chief and you get the spiffy white
    hat.

I notice there are two white hats. You can also work your way
up to head of construction if you'd like a spiffy white hard
    hat.

Saw people sitting in the park with easels and painting the
Creamery Bridge as I went by yesterday in the late
    afternoon.

We'll need to get a report from folks going to the Farmer's
market... is the new parking a plus?

I sent a suggestion that it be named the New Creamery Bridge. They were taking suggestions previously at tmsecretary@brattleboro.org.

    Oh no! No bottleneck!
    Authored by: pjmelton on Friday, September 03 2010 @ 12:34 PM GMT+5
I drove by for the first time since the bridge opened. I noticed that there is no longer a bottleneck at that intersection.

This might sound like a good thing, but I'm not so sure. The bottleneck caused by the one-lane bridge would make people more aware of the intersection. Drivers on Route 9 would see drivers wanting to enter traffic, and would courteously let them turn. Now the incoming traffic is difficult to see while you drive along.

This could be just because I'm not used to watching for it, though. Have people who use the bridge regularly found it is harder to turn onto Route 9, easier to turn, or the same?

We may need to wait and see for a couple weeks, because it is Labor Day weekend, and the traffic is already INSANE.

Most bridges around here seem to be named for what is on the other side of them. For example, the Hinsdale Bridge, and the Chesterfield Bridge, which brings to light one of the problems with bridge naming. If you told someone there was an accident on the Seabees Bridge, (Rt. 9 to Chesterfield) and it was closed, they might look at you and say “the what bridge”? So just because a bridge has been given a name, it may not be referred to by that name. Sometimes practicality sets in. That’s why my first suggestion for the new bridge would have to be the “Memorial Park Bridge. No matter what the name ends up being, Memorial Park will always be on one side of the bridge.

It would be nice to see all of the name suggestions posted here on Ibrattleboro so that the interested parties could possibly support a name suggestion already made. But, I’m sure a name has already been chosen and it will probably make all of my off the wall names that just went through the shredder, seem normal.

Here's my 2 cents and simple suggestion. C2 as in Creamery Bridge #2. Pronounced 'Seatu' in case you needed dictionary type help... No matter what it is named, in common speak I think it will just become 'The Creamery Bridge'. Same location, same function, and the historic association to a long gone creamery does not change.

    Whetstono Narrows Bridge

    4 Player Contract Bridge

    Shortcut Bridge

    Crosstown Expressway Bridge

(We could intentionally spell it wrong and have the
Creamery Brig, or the Living Memorial Bride.)

    Fireworks Bridge

The Bridge! (Musically, as in, "take it to the bridge")

Does anyone know the name of the family whose house was
razed who ran the original creamery? Why not name the
bridge after that family? That way the new bridge would pay
tribute to the original family, and the theme of the creamery
would remain intact for both bridges.
