    Brattleboro Primary Write-In Votes

Thanks, Chris, I was wondering about this. It doesn't appear to me that it does any good to do a write-in.

It worked for Lynn Corum. She'll be on the ballot this year
    thanks to write-in votes.

I think it also matters if you don't like any of the choices
provided... writing in your own choice sends a message, even
if it is small, that at least one voter wanted a different
    outcome.
    Who is doing the recount?

I really do love the write in votes. I would also love to know how the absentee votes broke.

Has anybody volunteered for the recount? Wonder how that's going. Each candidate needs 40 counters per county, right?
    How Many Registered Voters?

With a population of just over 12,000, how could
Brattleboro possibly have 9,364 voters? Are there no
children in Brattleboro, and no unregistered adults?

Isn't it true that a person who registered to vote 10 years
ago and then moved out of town, will still appear on the
rolls as a voter? After all, very few people will think of
telling the town clerk to remove their name when the
    move away.

So when we get low percentages for voter turn-out, how
accurate is it? That figure of 24% might really be 30% or
    35% or 50%.

    Seems likely.
I know that many Marlboro College students live in Brattleboro and vote here. MC has had several voter registration drives over the years and I doubt those kids think to tell the town clerk when they leave.
    How Many Registered Voters?

I have been helping at the polls for several years. I have learned that after several years if someone doesn't vote for a period of a few years, that the town clerk's office sends them a note to which they are supposed to reply in order to remain on the check list. This was very evident when the vote was held regarding Pay As You Throw. Several people showed up whose names had been removed from the checklist. It isn't enough to still have property in town. You need to participate and/or reply to the town clerk's office when you get a communication from them!

Joann's post suggests that voters who have neglected to go to the polls in a presidential election will be motivated to vote in a very local election; ie. PAYT. The closer you bring an issue to home, the more the unmotivated become motivated. Hmmmm.
