Snowpocalypse Hits Brattleboro

NatureFinally, our very own snowpocalypse right here in Brattleboro. Too bad we don't have a local network TV affiliate to hype it for us. Then again, there's us.

In case you haven't looked out the window yet, it's snowing! On Cedar Street, it's snowing very hard, with many inches of snow on the ground, and almost no traffic on the snowy street itself. Visibility is fair -- I can see the house across the street through the falling snowflakes. There is little wind. The temperature is 25 degrees.

I measured the snow outside my back door with a ruler. In a shallower area, I am recording 11 inches of snow and rising. There are higher drifts, but I'm trying to be conservative.

I have no idea if there are closings -- I imagine there are. Meanwhile, all the cars from the other tenants are still parked in the driveway and socked in with snow. The owners have not yet emerged to free them (which I believe will involve "driving out of the driveway over the snow"). We, on the other hand, drive a Civic and will have to shovel. ;)

From my informant in Milford, NH, I have learned that they also have "lots of snow" and that as of 9:15 am, it was still in the form of "microflakes." Here, the flakes have gotten bigger which (according to my uncle) means the snow will not go on much longer.

Snowpocalypse is, of course, a joke. We're teasing our
southern relatives who get headlines like that every time a
    snowstorm comes along.

It is a lot of snow, though. I tried to hook the cats up to the
snow sled but they didn't get very far. Lots of meowing and
we only made it a few feet.

The trick is to put toothpicks between the toes of their paws, spreading them, to widen the paws and create a 'snowshoe hare' effect. Thereby they can ride on top of the snow and not sink in. Makes all the difference, and the felines love the new-found access to our winter wonderland.

"Ultimately, this won't matter, as we may have less and
less snow and no ski jump in decade or so. So, thanks for
the lights at the future water slide!"

There actually may be too much snow on Harris Hill now. I don't think a frozen water slide will work. Oh yeah, I forgot this snow storm was an anomaly we're not supposed to get these with Global Warming and all.

If you think this week's snow is going to last a decade, you're more confused than I thought.

I have also received a report from Putney Road (North Main)
that it is snowing there too, and she thinks it amounts to
    "about a foot."

I'm really glad my feeling that it'd be an icy-sleety-rainy winter was wrong.

We've got about two feet of scattered flurries in the hills so far, and there's no sign of it slowing. I expect the CNN crews are on their way for 72-hour coverage live from the scene, with on-the-spot analysis from politicians, weather experts, highway officials, Eskimos... oh, and the news conference with the Governor.

I can see the Backside (which is open!) out my windows, but not clearly any further. Looks about a foot out there. And it's beautiful!
