    Happy 9th Birthday, iBrattleboro
    Monday, February 20 2012 @ 05:28 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: cgrotke

iBrattleboroHappy Birthday to everyone who enjoys iBrattleboro. It was 9 years ago today that the site began. To celebrate the start of year nine, tell me something:

    1. When and how did you first hear about the site?

    2. Do you have any all-time favorite iBrattleboro stories, comments, topics, etc.? Anything matter, or make a difference to you?

    3. How should we celebrate the 10th anniversary next year?

Lise and I started the site as an experiment in crowd-sourcing local news and for that to work there had to be a crowd of some sort. We’ve found since then that local issues and events often drive people’s desire to share and communicate. The crowd grew naturally over time.

The concept is simple: if everyone contributes what they know, then we can all know everything.

Over 2,413 have registered to contribute news, events, or commentary, with 19,898 stories,

Thank you to everyone who writes. I love reading what you have to say. I’m proud of those who choose to share news and opinion, share information, ask questions, and provide some comfort and occasional amusement for their neighbors. You shape the town we live in.

Thank you to everyone who uses the calendar. You've made it the most popular destination for local event information.

For those who read, but haven’t yet written anything, I thank you, too. Jump in anytime, the water’s fine.

95,650 comments, 7,991 events, and over 37 million page views.

Thank you to our advertisers, reaching between 30-40,000 unique visitors a month.

Thank you all, and happy birthday to you. (I’m not quite up to making cakes for thousands of people, but I’m trying...)

    Keep up the great work!

You'll have to remind me of what the ad in the Reformer
said.. something about a surprise in the works, so I
kept buying the Reformer until the secret was revealed.

Of course, I'm nine years oldER so my memory may be
    off the mark?

We didn't take out any ads. Hmmm. (That's effective
advertising - people see one that you didn't buy!)

Dan Barlow did a story on the site in the summer of 2003,
and we had flyers around town with words beginning with the
letter "i" on them - as a tease.

    Glad to have you, babalu!

Good grief, NINE YEARS already? Congrats, you guys!

I have to say my very favorite story was the night we all stayed up with the Brooks House fire. That was just amazing.

Next year you should have a masquerade ball.

    Happy Anniversary!!!

I had wondered if iPutney.com was inspired by the apparent success of iBrattleboro.com.

Hope Chris, Lise and your site followers are around for many years.

In 2009 my husband and I fullfilled a dream of ours by purchasing a little shack in the mountains near Bratt and that May we officially became seasonal residents. At that time we didn't know much about Vermont except that it was one of the prettiest states we have ever seen. Eager to learn where to shop, hike, etc. I began surfing the web and was delighted to find ibrattleboro. This site with everyone's opinions, stories and photos taught us everything we needed to know and I still check daily for new postings or photos. Keep up the good work everyone!

Nine years? No, it couldn't be. Nine years? I first heard about ibratt from a flyer that turned up at the rfb studio. Favorite stories: Inside the Courtroom at the rfb trial, reminiscences of the entertainer "Sweet Pee", the BCTV follies, uber-cranky posts by JohnDoe#1, darqmatr's posts, the "what's going on" guess what the picture is posts, the Co-op vs the Union movement stories, the Reformer Union vote stories, and a haiku about snow higher than the porch. That's for starters, anyway. For the 10th Anniversary? A very large party at the RiverGarden which one gets to by using the new downown monorail.

It was fall of 2003 when I got online for the first time (had lived computer-free life 'til then). Typed in "Brattleboro", 'cause this is where I live-sorta' the way one looks for one's own listing when the new telephone books come out.
ibr was there in the search results, and I've been coming back to the site ever since.

I check ibr a few times each day, it's my main source for local information.
Especially appreciate the selectboard meeting notes/transripts Chris & Lise work to transcribe and provide to the community-that is a major public service they're doing.
Photo essays also help provide a sense of an event, place, time, etc.-appreciate those a lot.

iBrattleboro is a great example of a small business that
    benefits its community.

It was a great idea, and it is well done. It deserves to
    succeed.

I've seen these sorts of listings before. Amusing, but
inaccurate in many ways. We use our real server stats rather
than third party estimates. Cute robo-guesses, though.

We're interested in why you use the site, what stories have
meant something to you, and that sort of thing.

That's something no stats can tell us.

In response to Chris' question of what draws people to the site, I'll share
something written awhile ago, then mothballed, for whatever reason. It
    seems appropriate here and now.
    --

I once saw, in person, one of my favorites outside Madison Sq. Garden, about
to head into a Knicks game. I can't fix the date exactly, sometime in the late
seventies/early eighties. He was taller than I expected, large to the point of
looming, which added to my already inflated view of him. But he was not a
basketball player, he was a film director.

His works are distinctive and iconoclastic, improvisational, with overlapping
dialog, strange plot twists and turns, a familiar stock of actors appearing in
differing guises again and again, rebellious, spiritual, mundane…these were
    the progeny of Robert Altman.

Some titles of early works that held influence, for those nostalgically inclined:
M*A*S*H, The Long Goodbye, Brewster McCloud, McCabe and Mrs. Miller,
Three Women, Nashville, Popeye…His body of work stretches into the 21st
    century and is indeed impressive.

I bring this all up here and now because it struck me that of all the creative
world's I can think of, iBrattleboro resembles an Altman film of some kind.
There are the recurring characters and themes, the threads that tangle or
snap, the mix of banal and bizarre, the rays of hope, the displays of awful
behavior, the sense that there's no way to know whats coming next, the big
crazy family of community, and the epic scope that arises from something
    small.

    Seconded. An eloquent comparison.

Chris Grotke wrote: “We're interested in why you use the site, what stories have meant something to you, and that sort of thing.”

Your interest with the “Happy 9th Birthday, iBrattleboro” article is, among other things, probing the intrinsic worth of iBrattleboro to us users, why use it, etc.

Tomaidh’s article “How to Remove Your Google Search History” is worth its weight in gold and is one example of the many reasons to keep iBrattleboro in our “Favorites” for handy reference.

Not to mention, having many, many interesting articles to read, stellar writing (Spinoza, especially!), the calendar of events, community compassion and bonding, personally conflicts, news from every angle, critical thinking, philosophy, advice and all the things from our content contributors that fall within the various section topics outlined.

I heard of iBrattleboro from a friend.
I concur with the River Garden as a venue to consider for the 10th BDBash.

Thanks for the kind mentions..it means a lot.

I began to post here for a variety of reasons:

Mostly at first, a citizen's journalism site offered a ready made
platform for coverage of the skatepark quest. Having a built-in
community, and site architecture in place in the town I lived, was
too great an opportunity to pass up.

I saw the chance to blend advocacy with exploration. The fusion of
ideas with interaction and conversation is too rare in the world,
    and worth supporting.

Over a hundred pieces later, it's living proof of the old saying…you
never know where your pursuits will end up…

Here's one of my earliest stories relating to the skatepark… and for
those who may be curious…with links that lead to material from
the Ur-days in the skate project's timeline.
