Weekend Concert Series: Pavement

MediaTo my surprise, I've been invited to pick the shows for February. After surfing YouTube for a while (and finding out that there are no show videos for most of my favorite bands then or now) I settled on the obvious -- 1994 Pavement. Pavement pretty much kicked off my indie rock phase which lasted from when I first saw them in 1991 to the present day. This show is a few years later and I definitely saw them on this tour, because I saw them on every tour they did until they broke up in 1999 or so. That's how much I loved Pavement. (Some people think Pavement is a cult.)

It's hard to explain. You'll have to watch the video and see what you think.

Hopefully, my high tolerance for low production quality won't scare anyone away on this -- give it two or three minutes before you click away. Pavement rock and there are lots of good songs. Best of all, it's them in their gloriously insane middle period which you will never see again. It's supposed to be noisy and a bit of a train wreck...

I've been instructed to give a language warning. This is rock and roll in a live club so there's some swearing implied.

I was unfamiliar with Pavement, but after listening to this I've added a bunch of their songs to my music list on Grooveshark.

This isn't the first time Lise has introduced a large number of
people to Pavement. Back in the day, she bought a bunch of
tickets and gave them out to friends, and got them all to go
to two nights of shows at the Middle East in Central Square.

This video seems pretty representative - false starts,
equipment problems, and rocking out. I like the way they
sound a bit like they are making it all up, but aren't.

Some bands sound better in the studio, some are better live. Pavement is a band that IMO kills it live. Slanted and Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe, has some really great live material. If you like Pavement, check it out!
