Drums and songs of Cuba, Brazil, and elsewhere in the African Diaspora. Rhythmic skills and creativity. Instruments include conga, bongo, shekere, bells, guiro, claves, surdo, tamborim, and more. Traditional rhythms such as rumba, bembe, and samba de roda; band styles including son, salsa, samba, soca, zouk. Julian Gerstin has taught percussion for over 30 years. He leads the jazz group Julian Gerstin Sextet, performs with Afrocuban folkloric ensemble Iroko Nuevo, and others. Class meets at the Vermont Jazz Center, Cotton Mill Hill building, Brattleboro.
