What will we do when we can no longer power our cars with a non-renewable fuel source? Bike of course! But why wait?! Come experience the romance of a pedal powered way-of-life. The workshop will cover basic bike maintenance, year round/ winter cycling, what bike is good for your needs, and the gas-free vacation. The session will be September 5th from 1:30 to 3pm at the Putney Library. A joyful and social bike ramble will follow, leaving from the parking lot at 3:30 (weather permitting).
Baeree Wyman has been a rider, a mechanic, and an activist of bicycle awareness for many years. In 2005 he performed a Thoreau-type experiment to see if he could live in a remote cabin and only use a bike to transport food, water, and himself. jess Sanford facilitates Antioch Universities Green Bike Program. Together they have toured all over New England without using cars.

Crosswalk across Main Street between the library and Brattleboro Savings & Loan
It's true, the state of Vermont has decided that because this crosswalk is not wheelchair accessible, it's to be removed in the final stage of the Route 5 construction, despite the fact that there is an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant crosswalk about 50 feet further north. Below is a message to this effect from Jerry Carbone in this week's missive from Brooks Memorial Library:
If you’ve traveled Putney Road in the last few days you may have noticed the bicycle lane that starts near Staples and ends before the roundabout. The bike lane separates the right turn lane and the main travel lane and has bicycle outlines or logo’s imprinted on it. Now is the time to weigh in on it since it’s in the trial stage and the Agency of Transportation needs a yes or no answer on whether to keep it where it is. Once the final layer of asphalt is put down and the roadway is striped again, everything will be permanent. There is very little time left for public input.
The Planning Commission will be discussing the Town Plan at their next Planning Commission meeting on Monday, August 23 at 6:00 pm in the Selectboard Meeting Room. The topics of conversation will be Transportation and Telecommunications. The public is invited to attend the meetings and participate in conversations surrounding the Town Plan.

I called a person I know in Greenfield the other day who works with color all day long and said, I see you got some new black traffic lights. How do they look? “Awful. “ So you’re saying you don’t like them? “No. They’re just ugly.” What does everyone else think? “Everybody says the same thing. They’re ugly.” Well, everybody can’t be wrong can they? “No. Not this time.” He rattled on for a few more minutes before we got to the main subject of my call and I never got to tell him they are the ugliest traffic lights that I have ever seen.
The problem is that they were never intended to be attractive and there’s nothing you can do to make them attractive. You can put fancy ornamentation on the poles to dress them up a little but it’s no different than putting a dress on a monkey. You still have a monkey underneath.
One Night Only! Selectboard Will Decide Fate of West B. This Evening

This is a big day for West Brattleboro residents, who seek a new "Rural Commercial" designation for a portion of Marlboro Road. A Selectboard meeting deciding the fate of the new standards will begin at 6:15 p.m.
But what the heck does "Rural Commercial" mean, in practice?
It means a little, and it means a lot.
It means encouraging development, but thinking about things systematically so the whole district hangs together, traffic flow is good, pedestrians are safer, and the area is pleasing to the eye in the end.
Brattleboro Citizens' Breakfast - Brattleboro Town Plan
July 8, 2010
Riverview Café - Brattleboro VT
Rod started as Planning Director in 2008. He explained by way of background that it is the Town Planning Commission's responsibility to draft a Town Plan, which the Selectboard ultimately as the authority to adopt and which the Town would then submit for approval by the Regional Planning Commission which entity reviews the plan against established criteria. If this process is successful, it will enable the Town to apply for certain rants on the basis of its having an approved Town Plan.
An open question is how the recently legislatively adopted "Challenges for Change" initiative might effect this process.
On Monday July 19th, at 8:30 AM BABB will host a meeting at the River Garden with Deb Spaulding from Lane Construction. Deb will offer the week’s work plan. She will also field questions that interested parties may have related specifically to the work and work schedule. Deb doesn’t promise to have all the answers but if she can’t answer your question she will seek info and get back to you. We’ll provide the coffee.
Please join us and bring others who might be interested. Thanks!
