Journalism Film Discussion Series Resumes With Free Showing of "All the President's Men" at the Latchis Theater on October 22, at 4pm.

What started as a “third-rate burglary” ended with the resignation of a president of the United States.

On Sunday, October 22 at 4pm, the 1976 film “All the President’s Men” will be shown free of charge on the big screen at the Latchis Theater, followed by a panel discussion on the importance today of investigative journalism. On the panel will be deputy editor of The Commons Randy Holhut, long-time reporter for the Rutland Herald Susan Smallheer, and former editor-in-chief of the Brattleboro Reformer and now editorial manager for the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Kata Casa.

The Latest Fashion Trend Is All About Your Data -- And Your Money

Five days ago, my former favorite magazine Nylon, a young woman's fashion magazine out of NYC, announced that they are ending their print edition, of which I am a subscriber. According to their press release, they will concentrate their (increasingly confused) efforts on their web and social media presence in their new role as "influencers."

You've probably heard about influencers with regard to hipsters on YouTube and Instagram, who leverage their status as high-traffic cool kids to present products provided to them by manufacturers so that other less cool people will buy them.

Newsless For A Week

We’re doing a media experiment. Lise is going without news for a week.

This started last Wednesday, and she’s been diligently avoiding headlines and talking heads. My role is to jot down the big headlines of the day, but not tell her. She’s allowed to look at weather forecasts.

I jokingly promised to warn her if a nuclear weapon was launched at Vermont (but not if it hit California or elsewhere...). Little did I know how closely I’d need to monitor that story.

WVEW Back On Air, But Stream Goes Silent

WVEW 107.7 , Brattleboro’s low-power community station, has stopped streaming.

The major storms of June 19th knocked the station off the air. (It knocked WKVT off the air for a short while, too.) Brattleboro radios tuned to 107.7 were treated to a week of static. Luckily, things have been worked out and you can now hear WVEW over the airwaves again.

Typically, the go-to solution when there is trouble with the over-the-air signal is to direct listeners to the WVEW stream, and it worked again this time. The station had created an app, available for mobile devices and had links on their web page. Many shows had many streaming listeners, and Brattleboro folks could take WVEW with them when they were out of the area.
