For libraries, summer time means summer reading. This year’s theme is “Build A Better World,” and the Children’s Room will be busy providing new programs and continuing with previous popular summer programs.
The Town of Brattleboro is asking for help from anyone and everyone who is interested in promoting increased diversity on the Town staff. In addition to proactively distributing all future job opening notices more widely than in the past, the Town will send those notices to any individual or group who wishes to receive them.
The Brattleboro Tree Advisory Committee will meet on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Hanna Cosman Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
The Brattleboro Selectboard held an extensive discussion of diversity, both in Town hiring practices and the community at large. It was a start and step toward something probably positive, though the goals and steps to get there remain to be more fully developed.
Emergency repairs at the pool and the Harris parking lot were the other big items on the agenda, but the long diversity discussion made for quick summaries of these and other smaller matters due to a late hour.
Emergency repairs at the Harris Place railroad embankment and at the Living Memorial Park swimming pool will be issues taken up at the Brattleboro Selectboard’s first regular meeting in June.

Brattleboro Community Justice Center, will be retiring in August. Kehnemuyi stepped into the position in August 2015 during a period of significant organizational changes, including new by-laws, a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Town of Brattleboro, and a new Board of Directors. During these organizational changes, Kehnemuyi has overseen the day-to-day operations of the BCJC, providing Restorative Justice programs for the Department of Corrections and the Brattleboro Area community. The BCJC is stronger for his service.
In observance of Memorial Day, all Brattleboro Town offices will be closed on Monday, May 29, 2017, with the exception of emergency services.
The Brattleboro Citizen Police Communications Committee (CPCC) will meet on Monday, May 22, 2017, at 5:30pm at Brooks Memorial Library in the Meeting Room.
The Brattleboro Water Department’s annual Water Quality Report for 2016 is now available on-line at www.brattleboro.org. Printed copies can be obtained at the Town of Brattleboro’s Municipal Center, in the offices of the Treasurer and the Town Clerk, at the Department of Public Works on Fairground Road, and the Brooks Memorial Library on Main Street.

The Brattleboro Selectboard examined and approved the FY18 Utilities, Parking, and Solid Waste budgets on Tuesday night. There was ample discussion about a wide range of energy-related issues throughout, from wood boilers and pellet prices to energy improvements in town facilities.
The Brattleboro Conservation Commission is hosting a free workshop for people interested in learning about Japanese knotweed and participating in a town-wide mapping exercise on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the West River Park from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Participants will learn about the plant biology, how to identify it and management options from Elizabeth Spinney, Invasive Plant Coordinator from VT Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. A project database will also be introduced.
Energy efficiency at the the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Drinking Water Asset Management will be among the issues taken up by the Brattleboro Selectboard at their next regular meeting at the Municipal Center.
The fourth installment of the 2016 Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on May 15, 2017 by 5:00 PM. Payments made after May 15, 2017 will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty added to the unpaid balance.
The Brattleboro Arts Committee will meet on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at 4:00pm in the Hanna Cosman Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
The next monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will be held on Thursday, May 11th at 6:00 PM in the Hayes Court Community Room on Garfield Drive (just west of the West Brattleboro Post Office). Postponed from April will be guest speaker Cassandra Holloway’s talk on the Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition.
Slightly revised and streamlined plans for Putney Road improvements were presented to the Brattleboro Selectboard at Tuesday’s meeting. Bike paths, sidewalks, and traffic circles are all part of the proposed plans, but work won’t start for years and faces many a challenge.
