I arrived in Brattleboro twelve years ago to do
a Masters program in education at Antioch New England. I worked
at Kid’s Place, partook of numerous arts and cultural activities
and hung out in the Coop Cafe. What I found was a town full of
caring creative people who had made a commitment to making things better
in their community, and I felt I belonged here.
My experiences as a teacher and with non-profit community groups have
given me a solid foundation in interpersonal relations, outreach and
community building. Over the years, I have had the opportunity
to have conversations with and listen to many people around town. Their
concerns and ideas have informed my opinions and decisions.
The three years I served on the Development Review Board and four
years as a Town Meeting Member provided me with a great foundational
education in Brattleboro town government. Since 2007 I have been
the representative and alternate to the Windham Solid Waste District
Board of Supervisors for which I serve on the Planning and Operations
Committee. I also was on the Union Station Committee and I have
continued my participation as the Selectboard liaison. Since
2005, I have been on the Board of Directors of Brattleboro Community
Television. In addition, I am serving on the board of Post
Oil Solutions, an organization committed to localization and sustainability.
In 2007 and again this past year, I served on the Brattleboro
Selectboard. My experiences on the Selectboard and other municipal
boards have reinforced my belief in the importance of involving as
many people as possible in dialogue throughout the process and incorporating
those diverse views in the work of the town. This idea is built
on my understanding that a properly functioning democratic government
is dependent on an informed and active citizenry. Please join
me in building a true participatory democracy in which the entire community
shares the responsibility of governance.
I am asking for your support. Vote Dora for a three-year seat
on the Selectboard.

I came to Brattleboro 20 years ago as a truckdriver with
Northeast Co-ops. It paid relatively well enabling semi-retirement at
a very reasonable age. All my life, I have read, studied and written,
exploring a world of interests. Of special interest has been history,
labor, economics, political and social philosophy. And baseball. Since
becoming active in civic affairs this knowledge has been applied to and
enhanced by seats on the Selectboard itself, the Planning Commission
(chair), the Development Review Board, the Town Finance Committee (chair),
Traffic and Safety Committee and the Police/Fire Facility Committee.
I have been a Town Meeting Member for many years. I'm a participant in
the Windham Environmental Coalition, sat in on a couple Windham Regional
Committees, and the list goes on. Currently I am serving as the chair
of the Charter Revision Commission. This is perhaps the most important
work I have done for the town. We are attempting to revise some of the
rules by which we live to reflect the reality of the 21st century as
well as better ground them in democratic principles.
I have lived in the biggest cities, small towns and deep in the Appalachian
foothills. I've never owned a car but I've criss-crossed the country
and seen a bit of Asia and Europe. I was in the US Army infantry in Vietnam
and subsequently marched in many a demonstration for peace. I've bought
most of my food in supermarkets (usually the Co-op in Brattleboro) but
raise all that I can in my gardens. I buy my fuel oil and have it delivered
to my home. But I've chopped plenty of wood. I simply turn on the hot
water in the shower to bathe but I've also knelt in a galvanized tub.
In short, I make do with what I have. I consume carefully. I do what
has to be done. I live within my means.

I was born in 1956 in Burlington, Vermont, and graduated from Essex Junction Vocational High School in 1974. I served in the U.S. Army from 1974 to 1977 and the Vermont National Guard from 1978 to 1979, receiving an honorable discharge. For the last 23 years, I've been an employee of Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
I have served on many town and state committees, as well as many area non-profit boards. I co-founded and serve as co-director of the Windham County Heat Fund.
I have been lucky to be able to serve the people of Brattleboro since the early 1990's, first as a District 2 Town Meeting Rep and as a member of the Selectboard from 1997 to 2001. Later, I served four terms as a State Rep for Brattleboro's District 2 from 1997 to 2009. While State Rep, I served on the Institutions and Corrections Committee where I was vice-chair for four years.
I'm running for Selectboard so I can put my experience to work for Brattleboro. I hope you'll vote for me for a one year seat.

Hi--I would like to introduce myself to the Brattleboro voters. I have lived in Brattleboro for over 3 decades. During this time, I have laid down many deep and strong roots in the Brattleboro community. In 2003, I received the Gail Lobenstein Humanitarian Award. This award acknowledges a lifetime of human and civil rights activism. The following is just a small listing that, in my mind, is relevant to my candidacy.
For nearly 8 years, I have served on the HIV-Prevention Community Planning Group. This community group interfaces with the Vermont Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Our primary task every year, when I attended, was to create guidelines for programs requesting federal monies concerning the AIDS epidemic, issues relating to human sexuality, and safe sex practices.
For 8 years, I participated as a member in the Coalition for Unlearning/Uprooting Racism through Education (CURE.)I had comprehensive training to deal with self-biases and prejudice to guide others on the journey of racial healing. I co-organized and facilitated forums concerning interracial group dynamics; I helped organize Walks for Racial Harmony with other likeminded groups such as Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity, formerly ALANA Community Organization.
For nearly 5 years, I have been a peer advocate at the Vermont Center for Independent Living (VCIL.) As a peer advocate, we assisted in Emergency Planning with area First Responders. For several years, I have with many others traveled to the Vermont State House to meet with Legislators about the needs of the Disabled; I have met with local state representatives and with Senator Bernie Sander’s office liaison to advocate for the Disabled.
I have sat on the Board of the Brattleboro Food Co-op for 3 years; reviewed grants for 2 years at the United Way; participated in the Study on Poverty as well as many other forums that have interfaced with many diverse groups in the community.
I received an Associate Degree from CCV and a Baccalaureate from Norwich University. Currently, I am a Master’s Candidate for Teaching English Second to Other Languages at SIT Graduate Institute.
