Artist Talk with Lyell Castonguay, Woodblock Printer

July 14, 2019 5:00 pm

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts invites everyone to an Artist Talk Sunday, July 14, 5pm, with Lyell Castonguay, whose solo exhibition Lyell Castonguay: Tributes, runs through July 28.

Castonguay is co-founder, along with Carand Burnet, of BIG INK, a travelling, nationally recognized woodblock printmaking partnership providing audiences an opportunity to create large – up to 8 feet – hand pulled woodcuts. His Artist Talk offers everyone the opportunity to ask the artist questions about creating and printing multiple woodblock prints.

Castonguay’s own imagery invokes disparate influences including Japanese ukiyo-e, the naturalist works of Audubon, and the expressionism of Leonard Baskin. Being a birder himself, most of his images are avian or strangely bird-like, bold personalities seemingly at odds with each subject’s intrinsic wildness. Through his artwork Castonguay makes connections to our own societal and environmental issues.

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is committed to presenting innovative, contemporary works that stimulate and challenge both the seasoned collector and aesthetic explorer. Regular gallery hours: Wed. – Mon., 11-5.
