The Brattleboro Area Interfaith Youth Group will be presenting information and visuals from their recent services trip to Asheville, NC at a reception in the Centre Church Parlor from 11-12:30 on Sunday, May 4.

The multicultural group of 12 youth and young adults, ranging in age from 13-22 and six adult leaders spent the week of April 12-19 on their service and learning week in Asheville, NC.

According to organizers, the group participated in hurricane and poverty relief activities, working closely with social services agencies in the area.

The youth’s volunteer efforts each day were coordinated and debriefed by Asheville Youth Mission, who will purchased their groceries for meals and provide basic lodging in sleeping bags in an Asheville church.

They spent a night at the Nature Camp in the hills of Virginia on the way down and back.

The goals of the interfaith group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish young people from Putney, Dummerston, Brattleboro and Guilford are many. All monthly activities aim to develop leaders, serve others, build community, support justice and practice compassion.

Organizers state that no church affiliation or spiritual practice is necessary, just a commitment to being of service and an openness to young people of different cultures and races.

“This couldn’t have happened without the generous support of Brattleboro Subaru, Back Roads Granola, area churches, the Lise Sparrow Fund, the Rotary Club and generous individual donors and groups,” said Nanci Leitch, one of the group’s coordinators. “ The young people held multiple fundraisers and presentations to keep the out-of-pocket expenses to a minimum.
