Brooks Memorial Library presents a free Creative Writing Course led by award-winning author Barbara Morrison on eight Saturdays, March 2 through April 27 from 3-5 p.m. (No class 30 March.) The course is for anyone who wants to understand or review the fundamentals of creative writing. Both adults and teens are welcome. The class is free, but please register by contacting Brooks Library at 802-254-5290.

Everyone loves stories, whether we encounter them in novels, memoirs, personal essays, films, or our best friend’s anecdotes. However, it can be hard to describe why a particular story works or doesn’t work. This course—appropriate for both beginning and experienced writers—will help readers and writers better understand and appreciate how a story is put together and give them the tools to create their own. Using exercises and guided writing sprints, these classes will explore techniques used in creative writing and practice applying them. There will be opportunities to critique each other’s work using guidelines that inspire constructive and positive suggestions. By focusing on the craft of writing, this course will nurture the inspiration and confidence needed to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) while also giving writers the skills to make their work shine.
