Trinidad-born trumpeter Charles says, “Jazz is Creole music.” His music incorporates song and ritual of the Caribbean carnival- danceable, percussion grooves that drive masterful improvisational forays.

Recipient of a Lincoln Center Millennial Swing Award and a CMA New Works Grant, Charles is now an assistant professor at Michigan State University.

He’s released three acclaimed albums as leader and performed with luminaries including Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, the Count Basie Orchestra and Roberta Flack.

“A daring improviser, Charles also delivers with heart-wrenching lyricism.” – Jazz Times
