ON FEISTY FIBER ARTIST ANN SUTTON

“My Bones Are Woven” November Feature of Free Monthly
Architecture + Design Film Series at 118 Elliot

6 November 2025, Brattleboro, VT: What inspires someone to start on a dramatically new venture in their 80s when contemporaries are putting their feet up? Find out in this delightful film “My Bones Are Woven” (Directors Jane Mote and Joshua Krenshaw, UK, 2021, 73 minutes) about iconic British artist Ann Sutton who won world acclaim as a weaver and industrial textile designer but, at age 78, dedicated herself to pushing the boundaries of fine art.

The film, hosted by local architect and design enthusiast Jim Williams, screens Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 118 Elliot, 118 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, Vermont. Doors open at 6:00 pm for conversation and refreshments; Free film screening begins promptly at 6:30 in Brattleboro and simultaneously in Burlington as part of the monthly Architecture + Design series curated by the American Institute for Architects VT Chapter. Free virtual day-of home screening as well as information on all films in Season 13 are available at https://adfilmseries.org/.

“Anyone who gets to know Ann Sutton wants more of her,” Director Jane Motes says: “Through her we gain valuable insight about the process of creativity and resilience. Whilst her art is bold, radical and inspiring this is not a biopic of an artist but rather about the thirst for co-creativity and an exploration of how age is not a barrier for creative excellence. Quite the opposite: She is a tonic to whoever meets her and through this film we want people to be inspired to believe they can do more.”

The film captures Ann in her ‘laboratory’ of a studio in England, working with her assistant Ruth to turn her endless ideas into radical creations. She is a magnet for artistic collaborators who enjoy her energy and wry humour. We see Ann’s world change as curators from two of Britain’s biggest art institutions – The Tate and V&A – start knocking on her door intrigued by how Ann’s rewriting of the rules and structures of weaving are informing her new styles of art.

The next film in the series will screen Wednesday December 10 “Modernism Inc.: The Eliot Noyes Design Story (Jason Cohn, 2023, USA, 118 Mins), which captures this remarkable designer and activists impact on corporate branding and American culture.
