ON-LINE: Thursdays, 8:00 – 9:00 pm, February 18- April 22, tuition: $200 (online)

Instructor: Claire Arenius

Explore the relationship between jazz and spirituality – how has the search for deeper meaning influenced the creation of jazz as a concept, inspired improvisational forays, and given rise to profound insights reflected in suites and compositions?

We will deepen our understanding of how jazz artists connect their sense of the spiritual to their music, and how that shapes their music.

The class will focus on a jazz master each week with an in depth look at their lives, including listening, videos, readings and ample time for discussion.

The class will include such artists as John and Alice Coltrane, Mary Lou Williams, Sun Ra, Paul Winter, Kamasi Washington, Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington and others.

Work exchange opportunities are available. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
