Lunar New Year of China, Korea, and Vietnam

Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) celebrates the Lunar New Year of China, Korea and Vietnam Sunday, January 26th^th, 1-3:00. You don’t have to be Asian or know anything about Asia to participate! Join us at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center to usher in the year of the White Metal Rat. The Rat is the first sign in the Chinese zodiac, and it marks new beginnings, fresh hope, and rising excitement. The year will be filled with interesting opportunities  We will start our celebration with a potluck and Longshanks Stilt-Walkers. One of many legends about stilt walkers tells of a flood that threatened villages with destruction until 12 spirits floating on clouds blocked the path of the waters. The stilt walkers represent these spirits and bring good luck. Then join us for traditional Chinese Dance with Wang Jin-Feng, Tai Chi with Joey Carroll, a Korean tug-of-war and traditional New Year songs and crafts. We end our celebration with a Dragon parade up from the Museum towards Main Street to bring us luck for the coming year.  Don’t miss the chance to dance with the 30-foot dragon. According to Chinese folklore, this enormous marionette, requiring at least 9 people to hold, is forever chasing the ‘heavenly pearl’ in its pursuit of wisdom.  Seth Harter, Director of Asian Studies at Marlboro College, brought this extraordinary dragon back from the village of an accomplished Vietnamese craftsman.
