A Very Special Treat! The Richard Schmid Residence Tour
We will be welcomed into the home and studios of Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik for an intimate tour of their life and art. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see many of Richard’s finest works up close. The tour will be guided by Nancy and members of the Putney Painters—Richard’s private painting group for the last 20 years of his remarkable life. It is Nancy’s wish that visiting painters have the chance to dine at Richard’s table, surrounded by his artwork and the spirit of shared stories. Proceeds from the tours support the Richard Schmid Fine Art Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to preserve his living legacy and personal collection. The Foundation continues to advance Richard’s educational and artistic spirit of excellence and generosity through his art and vision. As Richard often said,
“Art has the power to do good.”
Join Mark in beautiful Putney, Vermont, where Richard Schmid painted with the Putney Painters at Village Arts of Putney for nearly 20 years! This three-day workshop is filled with intense and comprehensive plein air painting instruction. Using the stunning New England rural environment as our motif, our main focus will be creating a truly authentic and realistic sense of light that will make your paintings sing!
WORKSHOP SIZE
Between 10 and 16 attendees for standard workshops.
ITINERARY
Mornings: From 9:00 am-12:00 pm, Mark will provide his remarkable teaching demonstration critical elements of plein air painting.
Lunch is from 12 pm—1 pm. Participants may bring bag lunches or order lunches from The Putney General Store, The Putney Co-op or The Putney Diner.
Afternoon: From 1:00-4:00 pm attendees paint, and Mark provides individual suggestions, advice, and critiques.
Group Critique: From 4:00-4:30 pm, the group reconvenes to do an optional group critique (Mark always says that if you juggled chainsaws and lost that day, you don’t have to show us the bloodied remains).

MARK’s WORKSHOP PHILOSOPHY…
“When I paint, I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas, I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic, realistic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time–everything else in my painting flows from this.
FOCUS: Given the priority of authentic light in my work, it is this element that I like to focus on during the three-day workshop. As such, we will focus on value and color temperature relationships above all else. There is no question that good drawing is paramount to our effort since nothing wrecks a painting faster than drawing errors. But I typically tell students that no one needs to spend good money to have me tell them to measure harder. Our time is better spent on the more difficult and crucial concepts of value and color temperature. Elements such as appropriate edges, surface texture, composition, and others will also be discussed as needed.”
