The Soubrette Jazz Choir sings intricate vocal harmony arrangements of swing, jazz, and blues, as well as songs by contemporary songwriters.

‘Soubrette’ is a term from musical theater for the non-leading lady who is usually more worldly, more instrumental in the plot intrigue, and funnier than the lead. We sing mostly these kinds of songs.

This spring the choir will be continuing to rehearse on Zoom, where Anna has worked out a method of using recorded vocal parts, mixed on the fly, to create a rehearsal experience that is much like singing live with a choir and an instrumental combo.

The goal of the semester will be to make recordings of 5 or more arrangements from the choir’s past repertoire.

We will learn these arrangements from scratch, rather than merely brush up on them, so singers who haven’t previously been in the Soubrettes are welcome as long as they are up for a somewhat accelerated learning experience.

Singers will need to record their vocal parts individually. We are using audio that is of higher quality than just singing into smart phones, so there is some technology involved in the process that may be new to participants.

Local singers can take the option of recording by singing into a mic on Anna’s porch, once the weather warms up.

There is also the option of participating in rehearsals without participating in the recording process.

Please contact Anna (annameryl@gmail.com) if you are interested in that option.

Note: the Soubrette Choir is open to anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary and whose vocal range comfortably includes the G in the middle of the treble staff.

Work exchange opportunities are available. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
