SUMMARY:Memorial Day in Guilford
DESCRIPTION:Christ Church Guilford presents its first outdoor program of the year. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, the Christ Church Guilford Society invites the public to honor our veterans and their families at an outdoor Memorial Day ceremony. \r \n \r \n The short program will feature remembrances and readings and will be followed by volunteer attendees placing American flags on veterans’ graves in Christ Church Cemetery. Memorial Day has\, for many years\, honored veterans from throughout American history. It originated as Decoration Day\, after the Civil War\, to honor veterans from that conflict. As Christ Church was built in 1818\, the adjacent cemetery is the resting place of many Civil War veterans\, and several of the presentations will recall the war between the states. A reading from World War I is also included.\r \n \r \n Decoration Day was so named because it was a time for "decorate" graves with American flags and other remembrances\, and this commemoration honors that tradition\, as those present will be invited to decorate those graves with flags provided.\r \n \r \n Christ Church Guilford is located at Melendy Hill Road and Route 5 in Algiers Village\, Guilford. Participants may wish to bring lawn chairs or blankets to this free ceremony.
