DESCRIPTION:Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio\r \n \r \n Saturday\, September 19\, 2026\r \n 7:30-10 pm\r \n \r \n Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba was already a young phenom with a budding career in his native Cuba when he was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1985.\r \n \r \n Since then\, Piano &amp\; Keyboard Magazine selected him in 1999 as one of the great pianists of the 20th century\, alongside figures such as Glenn Gould &amp\; Bill Evans.\r \n \r \n To date\, Rubalcaba has won five Grammy Awards (for a total of 21 Grammy &amp\; Latin Grammy nominations) &amp\; four Latin Grammys. \r \n \r \n Rubalcaba was born in 1963 in a musical family in Havana. Gonzalo\, a child prodigy who by the age of 6 was playing drums in his father’s orchestra\, started his formal training two years later\, with piano as his main instrument. \r \n \r \n He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Havana\, &amp\; by his mid–teens he was working steadily in Havana. \r \n \r \n Following graduation he stepped right into the life of the popular musician\, touring Cuba\, Europe\, Africa &amp\; Asia with the fabled Orquesta Aragón &amp\; also as a sideman in jazz groups &amp\; \, beginning in 1984\, leading his own Afro-Cuban jazz rock fusion band\, Grupo Proyecto.\r \n \r \n Encounters with Dizzy Gillespie &amp\; \, in 1986\, with Charlie Haden &amp\;  then Blue Note Records president\, Bruce Lundvall\, set the stage for him to perform &amp\; record in the United States &amp\; Europe. \r \n \r \n Rubalcaba moved to the Dominican Republic in 1991 &amp\; settled in Miami in 1996\r \n \r \n Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, piano\r \n Matt Brewer\, bass\r \n Eric Harland\, drums\r \n \r \n $25+ general admission (sliding scale)\r \n Donations for livestream welcome.\r \n \r \n For accessibility support please call in advance.\r \n \r \n 802 254 9088 ext. 1\r \n eugene@vtjazz.org\r \n www.vtjazz.org\r \n \r \n Vermont Jazz Center\r \n 72 Cotton Mill Hill #222\r \n Brattleboro\, VT 05301\r \n
