For some reason I haven’t yet determined, I decided to create an electronic music festival, called Circuits in the Woods, in downtown Brattleboro on Saturday, November 15 of this year. https://www.novaarts.org/events/circuitsinthewoods
It’ll be an all-day thing at a few different venues: Marigold, Turn It Up, and 118 Elliot. There will be 20+ acts, including performances, lectures, a space opera, and a hands-on thing we call “the synth petting zoo.”
Headliners are Wet Tuna, and Jeffrey Alexander + The Heavy Lidders. Charles Dodge (electronic music pioneer) and Caldon Glover-Wessel will be presenting lectures. Many artists are local; some are from Philadelphia, NJ, and NYC.
I’m partnering with Eric Gagne at Nova Arts in Keene — he’s my co-producer (but this will be in Brattleboro). I have two excellent assistants with tons of experience as electronic musicians and festival organizers: Chris Randall and Joseph Conrad. And, the community is stepping up to support us; SO MANY friends are helping put this on. I wouldn’t / couldn’t do it any other way!
My reason for doing this is to honor Vermont’s contributions to electronic music. The invention of the analog synthesizer was completed in Brattleboro. Some 60 miles north, the Synclavier was developed in White River Junction.
I’m following those ley lines to what’s happening now with electronic music, here in Vermont and elsewhere.
Circuits in the Woods is a reminder that there are as many ways to make music as there are musicians.
This festival includes artists who make music using only synthesizers and other electronic instruments.
This festival includes artists who make music using electronic instruments as a way to manipulate acoustic instruments, field recordings, audio samples, and their voices.
By featuring electronic musicians from Vermont and northern New England — and by welcoming performers from further afield — we’re reminding participants that Vermont is not frozen in time.
We are not an anachronism, puttering along behind everyone else.
Festival passes are on sale now at https://www.novaarts.org/events/circuitsinthewoods
We’re offering sliding-scale admission so EVERYONE who wants to join us can join us.
I hope you’ll consider joining us. Bring friends! It’ll be fun!
Yay!
-Wendy
