Singer-songwriter and musicologist Miriam Elhajli interviews Anna Lomax Wood, President of the Association for Cultural Equity (ACE) and daughter of the organization’s founder, musicologist Alan Lomax. The talk will focus on ACE and the Global Jukebox, an online database and interactive website, which allows users to listen to and learn about more than 6,000 songs from 1,000 cultures — including many from Lomax’s personal collection. Miriam Elhajli will perform a few songs to lead off the presentation.

Anna Lomax Wood is an anthropologist, ethnomusicologist and public folklorist. She is the president of the Association for Cultural Equity (ACE), established in 1985 by her father, musicologist Alan Lomax, at Hunter College, CUNY.

Miriam Elhajli lives in New York City where she performs & works as a researcher at The Association for Cultural Equity. Moving in the intersection of the vibrant avant-garde and the folkloric communities of Brooklyn, she has collaborated with musicians such as Jen Shyu, Mali Obomsawin, Adam O’Farrill, Jason Lindner, and Chris Dingman. Elhajli released her debut LP “Observations” in 2020 and her sophomore “The Uncertainty of Signs” earlier this year on Numina Records, a label she founded to aid in the documentation of traditional womens music in the Maghreb and beyond. Numina is set to release Elhajli’s third LP as well as Moroccan chaabi ensemble, Bnat El Houariyat’s record next year.
