Sunday Noon Concert at the Latchis

Windham Philharmonic

Hugh Keelan, Music Director

June 11, 2023

Enjoy a special noontime concert by the Windham Philharmonic at the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro.  The program will include works by Chevalier Joseph Bologne, Ruth Crawford Seeger, and Franz Joseph Haydn. Bologne, also known as “Black Mozart,” was a free man of Creole ancestry who was an esteemed violinist, fencer, and composer in France at the turn of the 19th century. Bologne has become better known as a result of the film “Chevalier,” a 2022 release. We will perform his overture to “L’Amant Anonyme.” Ruth Crawford Seeger was a mid-twentieth century American composer who had a fondness for classical style music as well as American folk music. She was also the stepmother of the legendary Pete Seeger. We will perform Andante, arranged for string orchestra from her String Quartet 1931. “Papa” Haydn composed 106 symphonies; we will perform number 92, the “Oxford.” This symphony debuted in Paris in 1789, but received its “title” after being presented to Oxford University as an example of Haydn’s compositional style when he received his Doctorate of Music.
