FUTURE SPECULATION

I would rather hope for good results from protests against the Trump administration, but my fear is that the reality we may face could be deadly for too many people. Speculating on the future is usually a fruitless activity, much like trying to predict an election. But the times we live in demand that we try to prepare for what may come as the world of Trump transforms this country and the rest of the world.

There are a number of areas where we can expect major change. Local and world economies are preparing for unprecedented disruptions. The U.S. is becoming more of an isolationist nation. Trump thinks that he is making America stronger by operating in the bully mode when it comes to trade and tariffs.

It is possible that these kind of tactics will result in the opposite outcome that the American dictator wants. Europe, as well as many other places around the world, are already forming new alliances and Trump is forcing countries to come up with strategies that will result in more costly goods for Americans as well as shortages of essential items that this country needs to keep operating. America could become so isolated as to become meaningless in the world order of commerce. How many bankruptcies has Trump caused?

Then there is the domestic world. Passage of the recent budget bill attacked just about every program that the most vulnerable among us need to keep alive. At least 11 million people will lose health insurance.

Families will be cut off from food assistance because of SNAP changes. These kinds of cuts have repercussions that will eventually affect everyone.

Hospitals will lose significant income. Many were struggling before the budget bill but now they will lose money because fewer people will initially lose access to care. As time passes, many of these people without insurance will become sicker and suffer longer. By the time they get to a hospital their condition will be more costly to treat and hospitals will be hard pressed not to treat them when they show up at the ambulance bay.

They may not get the kind of care they need when the hospital finds out they have no insurance. Hospitals will be forced to cut corners and discharge patients faster than usual. When these people without insurance are discharged they won’t be able to go to any rehab facilities and they will have to go home, no matter what kind of shape they are in. It will be the new social order: survival of the fittest.

As trade starts hurting the U.S. economy this country will become more vulnerable militarily. Trump thinks he will be improving the economy, but very few people with functioning brains believe that. If the economy improves as a result of Trump’s action it would mean that nothing makes sense anymore.

If the economy weakens as a result of trying to fatten the bank accounts of America’s wealthiest people Putin, Xi and a host of other powerful leaders will look for weakness and for ways to hurt the American economy even more. We no longer have to rely on conventional warfare in order to bring a country down and the U.S. is lagging in its ability to fight a cyberwarfare battle. We could be taken over by Russia or China without a bullet or a bomb every being deployed.

As all of these possible tragedies play out don’t forget that American scientific research will also become severely weakened, as is already happening. The rest of the world will have treatments that we may not have access to and that could become another tool of subjugation.

I hope these events that I have described do not happen. But as long as Trump is in office the world will be in a constant state of turmoil.
