Noticed Around Brattleboro – Summer 2025 Edition

A space for you to add little things you see around town, such as:

  • it is hot – hovering around 100 on some thermometers in late June
  • Beadniks has a sign up at their new location, and paper on the windows. Looks like they will be re-opening soon  just up the street from their former spot. Near Gallery in the Woods now.

  • Road Work Soon

Electronic signs are up around town warning drivers about night work on most major roads around Brattleboro starting July 7. There is also a bit of paint marking on Elliot/Church St making it look like some work os due to start there soon, too.

  • Helicopter

Helicopter circling over downtown Brattleboro the past 1/2 hour looking for someone or something.

  • Store Closing

The business that replaced the 7-11 in West Brattleboro has closed.

  • New history markers

BHS put new history markers around town to help people learn more context about where they live.

  • Lotsa changes

Plated is closed. (Quick quiz – do you even know what that is? It was the short-lived restaurant on the corner of High and Main in the Brooks House.) Restaurants seem to do poorly in that location. Anyone remember Dragonfly Dry Goods in that spot?

There is a new herbal something or other going in where Galanes departed. Tea? Herbs? Both? The exterior is a creamy white and the windows are getting some lettering.

Brilliance has some nice 30th anniversary banners up outside their shops on Main Street. Congrats!

Gnaw BBQ truck is gone from the Top of the Hill spot and is replaced now with a taco truck, it seems. There is also a Greek food truck up in the parking lot of Black Mountain Plaza.

  • fixer uppers

The long awaited fixing of Brattleboro roads that are state roads is underway. Not a moment too soon. It’s like driving in an obstacle course out there, with potholes and grooves in the road, uneven lanes, poor lane markings, etc. Canal Street, Main Street, Western Ave, Putney Rd… it’s all equally a mess and all being redone.

There is some real work happening at ye old ski hill (Maple Valley) on RT 30. Old wood removed, new windows put in, new decking added. It’s getting fixed up. We’ve seen this sort of thing before where it looks like something might be happening there, but it stops. We’ll see how far this project gets.

  • Books Mural!

I’m a bit late to this one but…

I LOVE what’s been done with my old “bookshelf mural” in Harmony Lot. It finally looks great. Thank you artists!

The original idea was that Brattleboro is a book/publishing town, and a big bookshelf mural there pays tribute to this history. It is also intended to be colorful and fun, with made-up book title that have meaning for people who live here.

The original mural was done with volunteers and some donated (ie, we had no choice over colors) paint. The second iteration got the old books painted over and new spines drawn, but then the project kind of ended (which was good, because it was starting to used for advertising artists – not the intention). Then it sat.

This new refresh is perfect. It has the color that the original had in the plan but not in the implementation, it has “local” books on the shelf, and it looks great.

    Thanks, whomever… !

  • Book shuffle

Brattleboro Books is moving, according to sign in the window.

  • migrating geese in V-formation honking louder than the Putney Road traffic
