Drums from Martinique and Cuba mingle with rhythms of Turkey and Bulgaria in the jazz world of percussionist/composer Julian Gerstin. Living in Martinique for two years, Julian studied the unusual tanbou drum, played with both hands and one foot. To bring this instrument to life here, he composed music for a jazz setting, where musicians can improvise and create on the basis of tradition.
Twilight Music begins its 15th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk rock, world beat, rock, pop, Celtic, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, May 28 with blues quartet Sunny Lowdown and the Ice Cream Men. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 20. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. Guilford, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG), now in its 51st Concert Season, is preparing for its 9th annual Spring Recital in the Organ Barn at Tree Frog Farm, the site of its founding event in 1966. Each season begins with an organ concert in this intimate barn on Labor Day Weekend. Over the past decade, a sort of “bookended” concert towards the end of FOMAG’s season has given the organization a second opportunity to celebrate its roots. This spring’s concert is at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, and is followed by an optional holiday cookout.
Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present acoustic swing and alt gypsy jazz quartet Caravan of Thieves, plus indie-folk-rock duo The Dupont Brothers, at Next Stage on Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 pm.
Planning is underway for this year’s BrattRock–The Brattleboro Youth Rock Festival. Now in its second year, the festival’s mission is to provide a venue for musical youth from Brattleboro and the surrounding region to connect, learn, perform, inspire, and be inspired. Events and activities emphasize both educational and performance opportunities. Participation is free and open to youth under age 20 who are musicians, or who have an interest in music or the music industry.
The 2017 All State Parade is tonight at 6:45 pm on Main Street in Brattleboro. It appears from the schedule that 14 marching bands will be participating. This is not to be missed if you are a fan of young musicians, parades, or marching bands.

Keeping Company With Songs and Poems: Verandah Porche and Patty Carpenter Create Special Show to Benefit The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library. Friday, May 5, 2017, 7 pm. Two local artists, the renowned poet Verandah Porche and her close friend, the jazz and rock musician Patty Carpenter, are combining their talents for a special show based on their friendship for the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library. The show will be at Brooks Memorial Library in the newly arranged Main Reading Room. Tickets are available at the library in advance of the show or at the door. To accommodate everyone, ticket prices are on a sliding scale: $12, $15 or $25.

Brattleboro-resident musician Joel ‘Veena’ Eisenkramer has released his new world music album on digital platforms worldwide and is now on a concert tour in India and the Netherlands. This tour will span from March to May 2017 and cover ten different cities in the respective countries. The album, ‘Unexpected Blessings,’ features Joel’s 21-stringed Indian slide guitar in collaboration with local and international musicians including Gordon Korstange, Todd Roach and Jed Blume of Vermont, Suraj Nirwan of India and Kees van Boxtel from Holland.
