On April 24, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will be offering a free educational program featuring Dr. Elizabeth McLarney discussing knee pain.

Dr. McLarney, who is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, will review knee pain. She will address its etiology and treatment. She will discuss both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options.

Dr. McLarney, who attended Brown University, Albany Medical College and completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, has experience diagnosing and treating a wide a variety of orthopaedic conditions. She works in the office of , which is part of the , a multispecialty group practice of primary care and specialty care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The group’s mission is to provide community-based, quality health services delivered with compassion and respect.

On April 10, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital hosted a dedication ceremony of BMH’s new lobby in honor of long-time Brattleboro residents Roland and Harriet Fisher.

The new “Roland and Harriet Fisher Lobby” recognizes the couple’s final and generous gift in support of BMH’s $3.5 million “Doorway to Exceptional Care” Capital Campaign for the new Emergency Department and front entrance at the hospital.

The guests were welcomed by BMH Board Chairman Peter Carvell. Following brief remarks about the renovation and the improved facilities, BMH President and CEO Steven R. Gordon, introduced the featured speaker Arthur Magnaghi.

On April 21, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will be hosting an educational program entitled, “Conversations about Dementia,” designed to help community members talk about some challenging and often uncomfortable topics.

Presented by Maggie Lewis, MPA, LNHA, director of programs and services for the Vermont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, this program will clarify many of the signs and resources, and clearly outline what steps can be taken.

“Many in our community confront issues with Alzheimer’s and related dementias,” says Lewis. “Often, we are unsure of seeing the signs of dementia and what steps need to be taken to plan for its occurrence.”

This spring, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is offering three self-management workshops to give individuals new tools to deal with chronic health issues and live a fuller, healthier life. All of the workshops are free and open to the public.

Two of the workshops are being offered in collaboration with the Brattleboro Senior Center. The first program, Healthier Living, will take place from April 15 to May 20. The second program, Healthier Living with Chronic Pain, will happen June 3 to July 8. Both workshops will meet from 9:30 AM to 12 PM every Tuesday for six weeks at the Gibson-Aiken Center.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Paul Stanchfield, PA-C, as a new physician assistant at Brattleboro Internal Medicine, as of March 24.

Stanchfield has more than a decade of experience as a physician assistant, including working at the Brattleboro Retreat, Brattleboro Primary Care, and Mount Anthony Primary Care. He completed the Physician Assistant Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Westminster College of Salt Lake City.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is pleased to welcome new physician assistant Maureen Mahoney, PA-C, ATC, to the Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine department.

Mahoney’s experience includes working as a physician assistant at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Keene and at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend. Previously, she was the head athletic trainer at Wellsley College in Massachusetts.

Rapid CPR, also known as hands only CPR, skips the “mouth to mouth” breathing, relying on rapid chest compressions instead, which has been proven to be as effective as regular CPR until help arrives. Rescue, Inc. will be onsite with mannequins to provide this training free of charge. No registration is required.

To raise awareness among local women that heart disease is their #1 health threat, the Center for Cardiovascular Health at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital announces it will host a Red Dress breakfast with Phaedra McDonough, APRN. The breakfast is free of charge.

The breakfast will occur on Wednesday, February 26, starting at 7:15 AM in the Brew Barry Conference Center. Phaedra will discuss the risk factors for women’s heart disease, symptoms and what women can do to prevent or reduce their risk of a heart attack. There will be time for questions to follow.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is pleased to welcome Robert Gailey as the new Director of Organizational Improvement.

In this position, Gailey will work closely with the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kathleen McGraw in leading the hospital’s Organizational Improvement efforts. He will also work with BMH’s quality director and department managers in developing quality improvement teams for specific “service lines” within the hospital.

Gailey, who has a Master of Science degree in organizational effectiveness with a specialization in healthcare, comes to BMH with 15 years of experience in healthcare supervisory roles and quality leadership positions. Most recently, he worked as the Quality Improvement Outcomes Coordinator at Union Hospital of Cecil County, a 122-bed facility in Elkton, MD, along the Baltimore-Philadelphia metro corridor. He is also well versed in both LEAN and Six Sigma methodologies for streamlining business processes and eliminating waste.

The Center for Cardiovascular Health at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH) was awarded funding of $5,000 from (VITL) for its participation in a pilot program. The pilot provided the Center early access to VITLAccess, which is designed to share patient health information through the Vermont Health Information Exchange (HIE), which is managed by VITL.

VITLAccess is a new, secure web based provider portal that allows healthcare providers to search and view information about their patients who may have received care from healthcare organizations across the state and in the surrounding area. This information includes radiology and lab reports, hospital admission, discharge and transfer summaries, medication history, and other health information. VITLAccess will be offered to all providers across the state beginning in the spring of 2014.

“The winner was Danielle Lauria,” said Caitlyn Wilkinson, owner of Renaissance Fine Jewelry on Main Street in Brattleboro. “She came in almost every day and bought tickets in both her name and the name of her newborn daughter. And the day after the drawing, Danielle’s husband brought her into the store and we surprised her. She was totally shocked; she couldn’t have been more excited. She even wore them out of the store,” said Wilkinson.

Georgio’s Pizza and Pasta Restaurant announced fifty two customers participated in its special fund raiser to support the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Emergency Department renovation and expansion project.

During the month of November, for every pizza sold to a customer presenting a special coupon, Georgio’s made a donation to “The Doorway to Exceptional Care” campaign.

“This is my hospital and I wanted to support the project” said George Leristis, owner of the restaurant located at 419 Canal Street in Brattleboro. “We are happy that we could support the hospital’s efforts to improve its Emergency Department. It is important it remains available for anyone who needs medical care, all day, every day.”

Brattleboro OB/GYN is pleased to welcome new midwife Heather Ferriera, CNM, WHNP, to the practice. A board-certified nurse midwife, Ferriera is a graduate of Ohio State University with a master’s degree in midwifery. She will provide both full scope midwifery services as well as gynecologic services. Ferriera, who resides in Brattleboro with her husband and son, will begin seeing patients as of January 6, 2014.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital officials announced the October 27 “” event organized by Brattleboro Ford raised $3,240.00 for “The Doorway to Exceptional Care” capital campaign.

Drive 4 UR Community is a Ford Motor Company program that enables local dealerships to support community groups and nonprofit organizations. The automobile manufacturer donated $20 for every test drive taken by an individual during the day-long event on the BMH campus. The proceeds will support the hospital’s efforts to raise $3.5 million from the community to renovate and expand its Emergency Department.
