Brattleboro—Hugh Keelan directs the Windham Philharmonic in “A Symphony in the Winter Months,” Monday, December 12 at the Latchis Theatre at 7 p.m. On the program is Tchaikovsky’s explosive Symphony No. 4, Opus 36, which explores the concept of fate and its inescapable influence on humanity.

A member of the orchestra wrote, referring to Tchaikovsky’s hidden homosexuality and bouts of depression, that “it continues to be a struggle for nonbinary humans to face the ‘fate’ of being different from what many people still regard as normal, and, in many places, those living with this ‘fate’ face institutional hostility. It can be argued that Tchaikovsky was referring to this Fate and this struggle when he wrote a program for the symphony.” Tchaikovsky closes his examination with hope and optimism. Writing about the work, he noted that in spite of fate, “there still is happiness, simple, naïve happiness. Rejoice in the happiness of others—and you can still live.”

The concert will last about an hour. Admission and bake sale are by donation; masks are requested.
