NEXT STAGE TO SHOW ACCLAIMED DOCUMENTARY ON WOMEN VETS

Putney, VT — Marking Armed Forces Day, the highly acclaimed film “SERVICE: When Women Come Marching Home” (http://servicethefilm.com/) will be shown on Saturday, May 18th at 7:00 p.m. at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill, in Putney, Vt.

The film portrays the courage of several women veterans as they transition from active duty to civilian life, following them as they overcome psychological trauma, severe physical injury, military sexual assault and the challenge of receiving care and benefits.

Saturday night on WVEW 107.7 FM features two of my favorite local radio programs.

Recycled Radio, hosted by Steven Twiss, is a musical time machine. Tune in at 6 pm each week to be transported back in time to the era of big bands and ballads.

What makes this a spectacular show is Twiss, who picks a date in history, does the research, and is able to weave popular songs, radio show excerpts, national news, and even local headlines into his steady, two-hour mix.

Often times, what goes around comes around, and the pressing issues of today correspond to what was going on in the 1940’s.  A radio bulletin about a war effort sounds both distant and current.

I see the Reformer added more comics…but no more page space…time to get out the magnifying glass.  Somehow I’m not surprised.

New documentary film “Hide” takes us inside the daily lives of several migrant dairy workers from Latin America who sustain Vermont’s iconic dairy farms and working landscapes. “Hide” illuminates the feelings and experiences of the hidden lives of migrant farmworkers–feelings of isolation, fear, lack of recognition and sometimes hope. Using an unusual narrative form, the film combines original music, obscured images, and multi-voiced narration to provide an intimate glimpse at the daily lives of migrant workers and their fight for dignity.
