Brattleboro Overgrown Vegetation Warning

Please be advised. Property owners are responsible for trimming and maintaining vegetation on their property if it may interfere with the public right of way. Overgrown vegetation creates an unsafe situation for pedestrians who may have to walk in the roadway to get by. It also impacts the sight distance for vehicular traffic. Please inspect and trim your vegetation accordingly. The town ordinance reads as follows:

Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting – Agenda and Notes July 23, 2024

Community Safety will be one of the major topics at the next Brattleboro Selectboard meeting. The Town will give an update on current and future community safety initiatives, including a Brattleboro Police data project and convening a “Brattleboro Collaborative.”

EMS billing policies will change.  The Town will buy a new sand and salt shed, HVAC system, improvements at Living Memorial Park, a new Fire Bucket Truck replacement, and more! You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

Western Avenue Sidewalk Project

Beginning Monday, July 15, 2024, DMI Excavation, a contractor hired by the Town, will be replacing the southern section of sidewalk on Western Avenue between Edward Heights and Greenleaf Street.  This project is expected to take several weeks. 

Crews will be working Monday through Friday between 6:30am and 6:30pm daily. There will be no on-street parking during this project and motorists should expect heavy delays in the area and seek alternate routes. Bicyclist and pedestrian traffic should use caution within the work zone and also seek alternate routes. Temporary walking paths will be established where necessary.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Rising Parking Costs and Property Taxes

A hot July evening, and the Brattleboro Selectboard approved new property tax rates. , The Town’s Finance Director told the board 75% of the increase is because of education. Dick Degray called it an unsustainable increase.

The new parking ordinance had a first reading. The costs to business owners and employees on Main Street was a concern to some and an outright horror to others.

The board made a list of things to discuss with legislators, adjusted rules for political signs, and discussed parking enforcement at the Vermont Country Deli.

Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting – July 9, 2024 – Agenda and Notes

The Brattleboro Selectboard has some spelling-challenged items to take care of at their next meeting. They plan to approve the 2025 “Fical” Year property tax rate and hear about a new proposed “pollical” sign policy.

The board will also discuss changes to the parking ordinance,  things they’d like to have the State of Vermont help with (transportation funding, the Grand List, community development, municipal revenue, and public safety and public health,) and their own goals for the year – community safety, child safety zones, and enhanced state revenue sharing. 

You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

The Brattleboro Charter Review Commission will meet on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 6:15pm in the Selectboard Meeting Room (230 Main Street, Suite 212) and over Zoom.

Brattleboro Utility Work on Greenhill Parkway

Beginning on Monday, July 8, the Utilities Division will be replacing the sewer main on Greenhill Parkway and Strawberry Lane.  Crews will be working between the hours of 6:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Residents will be able to access their driveways but on street parking will be limited during this project.  The work is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.  

Brattleboro Independence Day Closings

In observance of the July 4th holiday, all Town offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2024, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Thursday, July 4, 2024. All other violations will be enforced.

Brattleboro Selectboard July Meetings Shift

The July 2, and July 16 Regular Selectboard Meetings have been cancelled due to the July 4th holiday.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will meet on July 9 and on July 23 for the month of July. They will return to their regular schedule (first and third Tuesdays) next month

Brattleboro Line Striping Thursday Night

On Thursday, June 27, 2024, a contractor hired by the Town of Brattleboro will be painting road markings on many of the roads throughout town. The contractor will be painting 4” white fog lines and 4” double yellow lines. The work will begin at 9:00pm Thursday night, continuing through the morning hours of Friday June 28, 2024.  Traffic will be restricted and motorists are reminded to use caution as road paint could still be wet.  

Vernon Street Area Closed for Emergency Scene Operations

As of 9:45 p.m. on June 24, the Brattleboro Fire Department is on the scene at 541 Vernon Street (Route #142) responding to an active hazardous material leak involving a railcar. There is no threat to the public at this time, but the area of Vernon Street is closed for emergency scene operations.

The Brattleboro Fire Department asks all community members to avoid the area. Detours have been established via Cotton Mill Hill Road to ensure your safety and the safety of emergency crews.

Hazardous Weather in the Forecast for June 23

The National Weather Service is forecasting strong storms during the afternoon of June 23, 2024, in southern Vermont. The storms may bring heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and atmospheric conditions that could lead to tornadoes. Please be prepared for the possibility of flash flooding, downed power lines, loss of power, and road closures.
