Brattleboro NH PC 25(6)

Brattleboro NH PC 25(5)

Brattleboro-Putney PS 25(11)

DATE: Friday, July 18, 2025

TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Nighttime single-lane closures will be in place Monday night through Friday morning from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Work will begin on Vermont Route 9 (Western Avenue and High Street) and continue on Vermont Route 142 (Vernon Street) through U.S. Route 5 (Canal Street) toward the Exit 1 Interstate 91 interchange. Flaggers will be present to direct one-way alternating traffic through the work zones. Motorcycles should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.

PARKING IMPACTS:

Street side parking will be unavailable on Canal Street, High Street, and Western Avenue from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning. The contractor and Brattleboro DPW are working together to move small message boards to indicate parking restrictions for locations of work each evening. There will not be a parking ban along the street unless work is being done that night. Please see the infographic below for locations of work and parking restrictions. Phase 1 and 2 and Parking Brattleboro summer paving

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

The contractor is planning, pending final approval of their paving plan, to begin paving the first layer of pavement starting on U.S. 5 (Canal Street) at the intersection with Birge Street and progressing toward the intersection with VT 142 (Vernon Street). Once they reach the intersection they will turn around and come back toward the starting location. They will then plan to continue to pave toward the Exit 1 interchange and, once reaching that location, to turn around and pave back to the Birge Street intersection. They will then progress to side roads.

The milling operation will begin on VT 9 at the intersection of Cedar Street and progress along VT 9 (High Street) toward the center of town, turn around and come back toward the starting location. They will resume operations where they leave off and progress toward the Exit 2 interchange on VT 9 (Western Avenue) and then turn around and come back. Milling of side streets will be the last part of the operation.

Both milling and paving operations will progress with the flow of traffic. They are starting in the approximate middle of the project limits to alleviate congestion at the intersections at the ends of VT 9 and U.S. 5. Crews will have noise monitoring equipment to measure decibel levels over the course of the evening.

LOCATION:

This contract is a composite of three separate paving projects with detailed locations listed below. It includes all Class 1 limits of Brattleboro which are typically noted by a sign stating “State Highway Ends” and “State Highway Begins”. Work to be done on these projects includes coarse milling (grinding off the top layers of pavement) to a depth of 2 inches and paving a ½ inch leveling course and then a 1 ½ inch top course of asphalt. ADA evaluation of sidewalk and pedestrian crossings, sign replacement, guardrail repair and replacement, center line rumble strip location evaluation and installation, drainage work, and other highway improvements are also planned as a part of these projects.

  • At the DPW comedy club

You know our roads were so bad — the scarified pavement was an improvement! : )

  • That's no joke

Out on my motorcycle this morning down Western Ave from Guilford St to Main on the freshly milled surface. Then turned north on Main to Putney Rd. Western Ave felt smooth then on Main and Putney road like I’m a bobblehead doll.
