Trump and his amoral, unethical goon squad of cabinet members are doing everything they can to hurt the people they don’t like, which is a big chunk of the American population. They have no respect for people and prioritize ideology and personal profit above the value of human life.
At least 10 million people will lose health insurance and millions, many of the same people, will lose food stamps. It is still to be determined if those same people will no longer have the safety net of federal fuel assistance, but the pattern is clear. “Those people” need to stop relying on federal assistance of any kind because they are making it too hard for rich people to profit enough from American commerce.
The Republicans are working hard to privatize Medicare as well as Medicaid. They are working to eliminate the legacy of Horace Mann, working to eliminate the Department of Education. If these ideologues remain in power long enough there will no longer be public education. In many third world countries students have to pay tuition at all levels in order to attend school. The U.S. is modeling the third world.
All of this is a preface to the deadly situation that Health and Human Services secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. is creating for Americans health. It was clear from the start that Trump appointed him because he knew that he would be the best person to dismantle government supported health and health research. Put an incompetent ideologue at the head of an agency and you are sure to see that agency go down the tubes. That is exactly what is happening. CDC has issued a number of vaccine recommendations.
The CDC web site states, “CDC recommends a 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine for most adults ages 18 and older. Parents of children ages 6 months to 17 years should discuss the benefits of vaccination with a healthcare provider. The COVID-19 vaccine helps protect you from severe illness, hospitalization, and death. It is especially important to get your 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine if you are ages 65 and older, are at high risk for severe COVID-19, or have never received a COVID-19 vaccine.” This is in direct conflict with the recommendations that the media is writing about.
The CDC web site also states they have not yet posted their new recommendations. Those unposted recommendations, finding their way to the mainstream media, are making it clear that they are not recommending COVID vaccines for healthy people under 65 and children over 6 months.
This means that caregivers, healthy doctors and nurses and most children might not be eligible for insurance coverage for a COVID vaccine. The CDC has provided an out for insurers. The cost of a COVID vaccine without insurance is from $90-$200. That will deter most people from getting the vaccine. If you get a doctor’s note saying there is a reason you need the vaccine then you might get insurance coverage.
Hopefully, there is enough current herd immunity to protect this country from another epidemic. Many professional health organizations as well as individual states are making their own recommendations about vaccinations. Here is a partial recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics. “The AAP recommends a single dose of age-appropriate 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine for all children and adolescents 2 through 18 years of age in the following risk groups regardless of prior COVID-19 vaccination status: Persons at high risk of severe COVID-192 Residents of long-term care facilities or other congregate settings. Persons who have never been vaccinated against COVID-19. Persons whose household contacts are at high risk for severe COVID-19. Children 2 through 18 years of age not included in the risk groups above whose parent or guardian desires their protection from COVID-19 should be offered a single dose of age appropriate 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine.18 This dose should be administered at least 8 weeks after the last dose was received.”
Get your flu shot and find a way to get the COVID vaccine. Don’t let Robert Kennedy decide who lives and who dies.
