TIME FOR A NEW STRATEGY
By
Richard Davis
When fighting an unconventional war you have to think out of the box and develop new strategies to defeat the enemy. The war that is being waged in this country by Trump and his people defies logic, morality, ethics and common sense. But he has the ultimate power and, so far, he has been able to do whatever he wants. The only sensible counterattack requires new strategies.
One of the impediments to having a government that should be fair and just for the majority is the two-party system.
The world is hardly black and white, yet we expect our country to operate within an unrealistic system that only offers binary choices. Life is not like that.
Short of having a major coup and forming a completely new form of government the best we can do is to figure out new ways of countering the attacks by the dark knights of the Trump cabal. I believe it can be done, but it will require the democrats to give up their stale old ways and realize that they are in a battle for the heart and soul of this country.
Allowing the political process to play out on the big stage every four years only makes the party in office stronger. They have a constant bully pulpit and they can control the majority of media feeds whenever they want. The democrats have had little to offer to fight Trump and they continue to look old, worn out and weak.
Here is what I think must happen in order for the government in this country to function for the benefit of the majority and move in new directions that make it difficult for the right wing to dictate the cruel and inhumane rules of the game.
The democrats need to identify at least three viable candidates for president now. This will require massive planning and new thinking, but it can be done. These candidates should be people who have a desire to be president and who are willing to work hard for three years.
The new candidates need to take over the national narrative by creating a media storm surge that we have never seen before. At first people might complain that the democrats are making the presidential election process more painful for the public by making it last longer. They need to be convinced that this new strategy will lead to something better.
Whenever there is a major news event the candidates need to get out in front of it and push a point of view that is antithetical to Trump. They need to criticize him at every possible moment and flood the media with analyses that show
how off-base Trump is.
Now is the time to strike while Trump’s popularity ratings are so low. He and his party are vulnerable and the democrats have to act now while they have an opening that may not exist closer to election time. They need themes and a platform that will resonate with anyone who realizes what an evil machine Trump has created.
For this new strategy to be implemented it will require the democrats to rely on the younger people in their party if they are to succeed. They need to support the most charismatic and smartest candidates they can find and do it now.
Our country is in turmoil and no one is stepping up to fight the machine of evil that is shredding the constitution and destroying the concept of the rule of law. If we wait until the next presidential election it will be too late.
It may be folly to think that change can happen from the top down, but part of a new strategy should cultivate the power that a major people-powered protest movement can create. We can move closer to sanity with a bottom up and top-down approach at the same time. It could just be the strategy that saves the day.
