More than 70 years after Alfred Hitchcock came to Vermont to make The Trouble with Harry, Harry is headed back to Brattleboro — first on the page and stage, then on the big screen.

On Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m., the Latchis Theatre hosts a live, one-night-only, largely unrehearsed screenplay reading with a Vermont-connected cast including Tom Bodett (Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, Motel 6), Myra Flynn (singer-songwriter, journalist, Homegoings), Jeanine B. Frost (AFI alum, Vermont writer/director/actor), Chris Dorman (PBS’s Mister Chris and Friends), Willy Appelman (NBC’s Bring the Funny, Weston Theater Company’s Our Town) and Candice Taylor-Diallo (multidisciplinary artist, physician and founder of Creative Chromatics).

Actors take the stage with scripts in hand while a narrator reads the scene descriptions — allowing the screenplay to unfold live in the audience’s imagination.

Then, on Sunday, November 8 at 2 p.m., Hitchcock’s 1955 film returns to the Latchis big screen, followed by a community conversation moderated by Vermont filmmaker Bess O’Brien, with Jeanine B. Frost and Hitchcock/Hayes scholar Steven DeRosa, author of Writing with Hitchcock: The Collaboration of Alfred Hitchcock and John Michael Hayes.

Harry’s origin story lies first on the page: in Jack Trevor Story’s novel and John Michael Hayes’s screenplay adaptation, before Hitchcock brought it to the screen. The dark comedy follows a dead man discovered on a Vermont hillside and the increasingly complicated efforts of a collection of rather unconventional neighbors to decide what to do with him.
