Unexceptional History

I noticed the item in Today in History…in 1892, new boiler installed at the Brooks House.  It’s possible, but I’m not sure, that the boiler is located under the former Frankie’s Pizza.  It may briefly see light of day in the very near future when that building is razed.  I don’t know whether the plan is to bury or remove it.  Speaking of Frankie’s, it looks like his son is opening a restaurant/bar in the old HR Block location next to the former Lawton’s.

There are lots of great news stories in old papers about the Brooks House.

Various businesses were located there, and you’ll see ads and mentions of what they have for sale. It was frequently used for meetings, so there are reports of groups assembling there for different purposes.

You could get your horse taken care of. Lots of old ads for the livery and stables, and requests for woolen blankets. There were also regular reports of horse accidents (usually startled, they’d tip a carriage and run off until someone found them).*

Each Spring, there are reports of George Brooks returning from San Francisco.

    * The old papers had horse obituaries of sorts. Everyone knew the people of town, but also their horses. When a well-known horse passed on, the newspapers would note it. They also had a wider range of terminology for horses back then – often based on what they were best at – and there were frequent mentions of someone heading out west, buying a bunch of horses, and bringing them back for sale.
