  • Wow!

Thank you, Rick, for bringing this currently relevant 1844 news item to our attention.

I guess it is somewhat reassuring to realize that the type of aberrated public discourse which has become disturbingly common was also common more than a hundred years ago, yet the Republic survived.

My own take on it is that real problem is not so much the small number of lying bastards with a hidden agenda devising deception campaigns, but with the inability of such a large number of people to discern what is true and what is not.

    • Media literacy

“the inability of such a large number of people to discern what is true and what is not”

By design, it seems. Educational systems have been watered down and corporatized, with all sorts of things taken away over the last 20 or so years because they aren’t “STEM”. Between the bad systems and the students with phones, very few kids seem to get real educations anymore.

      Thanks Bush and Obama!

Yes, it caught my attention as I like scanning the items under “history”.
But, I also agree with you on your “on take” although one might add, “…. such a large number of people who don’t care what is true or not.”
And, now, we can disseminate false information with a click of a button and it does not cost anything to produce or share.

  • Many fronts, sides and backs…Apparently no bottom

Adding deep fakes, electronic scams, and AI algorithmic meddling to the malign social midden, and reality blur becomes exponential. The real challenge is for people of kindness and integrity to not grow cynical, and become bitter and disengaged.
