Weekend Concert Series: Black Sabbath, Live in Paris 1970

Black Sabbath are the pioneers and progenitors of Heavy Metal. Along with Deep Purple, Zeppelin and Judas Priest they created an entire genre of music.

Formed by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward in 1968, Black Sabbath were light years ahead of their time. Their first album was written in 1969 and is a timeless masterpiece. The opening track “Black Sabbath” still sounds heavy, ominous, and ahead of its time in present-day.

Black Sabbath tackled heavier and darker subjects than their counterparts at the time. In an era when people were singing “Are you going to San Francisco with flowers in your hair?” Black Sabbath were writing songs like: Children Of The Grave, War Pigs, and Hand Of Doom.

Their lyrics were mis-judged (often by people who didn’t bother to even read them) and were actually great. I particularly love the lyrics to War Pigs and After Forever.

In this concert, you see Black Sabbath making history. You witness them pioneering all things heavy, inventing headbanging, and taking music to a whole new level. They set the bar for countless bands who followed and redefined the energy and power with which music could be played and convey.

A truly legendary band and one of my all time favorites.

  • Sabbath!

This is a fantastic choice and one of my favorite bands. It’s Sabbath at their heaviest and highest energy. Thank you so much Spencer!

  • Blast from the past

I can remember buying cassette tapes of Black Sabbath in high school. I think I had them confused with Blue Oyster Cult for a while, but got it straightened out eventually.

Watching this, what’s even more amazing than the beginning of heavy metal is that Ozzie went on to have a reality show inside a mansion financed by this kind of music and lifestyle in his earlier years.

When did Randy Rhoads come along? A neighbor of mine used to claim he was the best guitarist ever. Many arguments ensued.
