Oh, Yeah. The Climate… New IEA Report Offers Sustainable Recovery Plan

Coronavirus. Protests. Police. Elections. Masks. There is a lot to be thinking about right now.

Add that pesky climate emergency back on the list:

“The world has only six months in which to change the course of the climate crisis and prevent a post-lockdown rebound in greenhouse gas emissions that would overwhelm efforts to stave off climate catastrophe, one of the world’s foremost energy experts has warned.

“This year is the last time we have, if we are not to see a carbon rebound,” said Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency.”

They warn that “emissions must start to fall sharply and permanently, or climate targets will be out of reach,” and advocate for a major investment in green jobs of the future. Instead, they see a trend toward refinancing and propping up a high-carbon economy, such as bailouts for airlines.

They’d like governments around the world to steer stimulus packages toward a low-carbon future.

the IEA has produced a Sustainable Recovery Plan for actions that can be taken over the next three years. This detailed plan is focused on cost-effective measures that could be implemented during the specific timeframe of 2021 to 2023. It spans six key sectors – electricity, transport, industry, buildings, fuels and emerging low-carbon technologies. The plan takes into account national and international objectives for long-term growth, future-proofed jobs and sustainable development goals.”
