  • which day?

I’m assuming your posting is correct and this event is FRIDAY. Sidebar calendar listing says THURSDAY. Please confirm!! This event is always a big thing and wonderful. For those of us who bank with you but don’t live in Brattleboro, I’m wondering if in future years you would be willing to send out an email to your customers who provide an email address (I’m guessing most have online banking by now) a couple of weeks in advance so we know when it is going to be and perhaps plan our “trip to town” to coincide with the appreciation day.

  • Appreciation of BS&L

Perhaps the community should have a BS&L Appreciation day.

Having dealt with BS&L for over 30 years, both as an individual and as a Realtor®, I can testify that BS&L’s claim to be a truly local bank is much more than a promotional slogan: It is a reality which has made a real difference is people’s lives.

    Here is an example:

Many years ago, a young couple whom I was representing in a home purchase ran into an impasse at another bank over financing. The inspection of the home they had under contract revealed a failed septic system. We were able to negotiate a seller’s concession to pay for the cost of a new septic system, which would allow the young couple to have the work done after closing. The bank they had been working with kept delaying loan approval, and when I asked the loan officer why, he said: [this is an approximate quote, of course] “This is a VHFA [Vermont Housing Finance Agency] loan, and VHFA will not remit money to the bank until after the septic system has been replaced. In order to close, our bank will have to lay out the money, and our underwriters are concerned that we would end up not being reimbursed if the buyers fail to replace the septic system after the purchase.”

And what really was an eyebrow raiser for me was his conclusion: “They are not sure that this will fly, so they have it on a back burner and do not want to spend a lot of time over it.” An eyebrow raiser and an eye-opener!

Immediately I brought my clients to meet a loan officer at BS&L. We explained the situation. The couple were schoolteachers, and they came to the bank with their toddler. It was obvious to the BS&L loan officer that these sincere, intelligent, loving parents could be counted on to act responsibly, and there would be no risk in fronting the money until the work would be done so that VHFA would pay out the funds.

At the other bank, the underwriters were probably in cubicles on a high floor of a glass and steel climate-controlled office building with windows that cannot be opened, in a remote city. The underwriters at BS&L were upstairs from the loan officer. They were not remote. The loan application for them was not merely “data,” it was about real people, and there was a real connection.

With lightning speed, and genuine concern and understanding, BS&L expedited the processing so that — despite the delay at the other “big” bank, and despite our late start at BS&L, we had a successful closing, on time. When I spoke with my clients a couple of months later, the new septic system was in, they had done other work renovating the house, and they ended up with a nice home in a decent location, at a cost which was affordable for them.
