Got Toxics?

Windham Solid Waste Management District (WSWMD) is hosting two household hazardous waste events on Saturday, October 19, from 8 am until noon. One event is being held at the WSWMD Transfer Station, 327 Old Ferry Road, Brattleboro; the other event is at the Stratton Transfer Station, 9 W. Jamaica Road, Stratton.

The collection events are open to residents in WSWMD member towns: Brattleboro, Brookline, Dover, Dummerston, Guilford, Halifax, Jamaica, Marlboro, Newfane, Putney, Readsboro, Somerset, Stratton, Townshend, Vernon, Wardsboro, Westminster, and Wilmington. There is a $10.00 fee, and a limit of 10-gallons of hazardous waste per household.

Acceptable materials include roofing tar, paint strippers/thinners, automotive fluids, driveway sealer, pool chemicals, chemical fertilizers, weed killers, pesticides, insecticides, spot removers, bleach, polishes, drain/toilet cleaners, mothballs, and flea control products.

Unacceptable materials include explosives, ammunition, fireworks, radioactive waste, unwanted electronics, medical waste, empty containers, fluorescent bulbs, and paint/paint products.

Paint and paint products, batteries, electronics, fluorescent lights, and mercury containing items are accepted year-round at the WSWMD drop-off center on Old Ferry Road, Brattleboro.

Businesses, schools, and institutions that generate less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month (Conditionally Exempt Generators or “CEGs”) may take part in the HHW Collection Events for a fee. A waste inventory must be emailed to recycle@windhamsolidwaste.org or call 257.0272 by October 15 so a fee can be determined.
