Noticed Around Brattleboro – Late Summer Early Fall 2016

Time for another edition of Noticed Around Brattleboro, where you are invited to note things you have noticed in your neck of the woods. Small things, perhaps. Anything, really. Here are a few to get things started.

– The new Elliot Street bridge is completed and looks good.

– There are new talking crosswalk buttons downtown at some intersections. (I’ll guess that these will be disliked by most. They kind of bark at you, in contrast to the tweeting sounds we’re used to. I pressed the button and it yelled “Wait!”)

– Western Ave paving is getting underway from Havilands to I-91.

– Pliny Park has christmas lights in some trees in what seems to be a more permanent arrangement.

– Red Clover development moving along, and ready for occupancy in the not-so-distant future.

  • Sam I Am

I do not like the new pedestrian safety features downtown that yell at you when you’re trying to decipher the many flashing light signals at the corner of High and Main in order to cross the street. I feel like we’ve gone way beyond the point of overkill down there and well into the territory of diminishing marginal returns….

  • Fire Station

New West B Fire Station taking shape.

  • Noticed

Canada Geese starting to pass through again, nighthawks gathering for their trek south down the Connecticut River.

    Cool in the night.

Rivers and streams all drying up.

Children and teachers scurrying around at start of school, traffic at 7:30 and 3. College kids off and gone again.

    Days getting shorter.

The rich getting richer, more homeless on the streets and benches.

  • harmony lot mural work

Scot Borofsky is repainting and adding to his mural under the new retaining wall at the back of Harmony Lot. He’s waiting until he can repair portions of the wall where the cement has “flaked” off in order to complete it. The new stuff looks sharp, thanks Scot!

  • ski jump dates posted

The Harris Hill Ski Jump folks are advertising the dates for the 2017 jump on their road sign at the hill. This is notable because in some previous years, this sign has sometimes been ignored until later in the year.

I like this early warning sign – a lot of traffic goes by, looks at the hill and wonders what happens there. Now hey can mark their calendars.

  • Roof!

The gas pumps at the Agway store are getting a new roof.

  • Twilight at 7

Leaves beginning to turn, plants in the garden dying off. The rose bush in my front garden is pushing that one last rose, that always blooms mid-Septemver.

  • two more

Western Ave road striping is complete. Enjoy the new bit of road while it stays new-ish!

The little marker in the Crowell Lot Park that tells people to go to Bennington is destroyed – a cheap design revealed in the process. They built sturdy metal “monuments” to place along Rt. 9, but wrapped them in a thin plastic layer that looks like it was easily peeled off. Should have spent the money and time to print on the metal directly, or opted for a different design entirely. There is still a bit of wrapping left, but pretty soon we’ll just have a nice green monument to nothing in particular sitting there.
