Western Avenue Paving Info

PUBLIC NOTICE

Paving work on a section of Western Avenue is tentatively scheduled for the third week of August. A contract with The Lane Construction Corp was approved by the Selectboard last Tuesday. The State has agreed to reimburse the Town for work on this class 1 road up to $150,000.

The area we are working on begins near Brattle Street, west to Edward Heights. Only the traveled portion of Western Avenue from white fog line to white fog line is being resurfaced. First a milling machine will remove ¾ inch of existing asphalt along each fog line, tapering to 0 at six feet in. Then this area is resurfaced at an average depth of ¾ inch, raising the center line depth and matching flush at the fog lines. In a few areas milling will go all the way to edge of pavement such as at the Bridge near Melrose Street and a section near Brookside Drive where the edge is very rough. Our reasoning for this method is to keep within the State funding and avoid work on and around many drainage structures. It also raises the road cross slope which should help keep standing water off the road. This fix needs to last up to three years when the state should have funding to fully resurface the road.

All work is planned for night time, starting after 6 pm to avoid the very long backups that would occur during the day. The Contractor estimates the milling be completed in one night and resurfacing in two nights. Town personnel will do the line stripping after the Contractor has completed their work. Additional notices will be published as we get closer to the work date.

Our regular summer paving, also by Lane Construction is scheduled for about the same time. This work includes milling and resurfacing on Chapin Street, Grove Street, and Fairground Road. Also included are levelling or shim course paving on Birge Street, a section of Guilford Street near Maple, and a section of Cotton Mill Hill.
