Williams Street Traffic Update

April 13, 2022

PRESS RELEASE

On Friday, April 8, the western leg of Williams Street, near the Vermont Country Deli was reduced to one way traffic due to a washout on the west side of the street.  To improve visibility and reduce hazards, the traffic pattern has been changed to only allow traffic to exit Williams Street onto Western Avenue on this side of the Deli.  Vehicles will no longer be allowed to enter Williams ST from the west side of the Vermont Country Deli.

Motorists should plan to use alternate routes while repairs are being planned and completed.

If you have questions or concerns please contact the Department of Public Works at (802) 254-4255.

  • Confusing

I have read the notice 3 times, and still cannot figure out what the new traffic pattern will be. Hopefully the signage will be be clear.

  • My guess...

It sounds like if you are standing in Western Ave in front of the Deli, cars can only head down onto Williams street from the eastern, left, closer-to-town side.

Cars will exit Williams Street from the western, right, closer to West B side.

This might help a tiny bit with organizing the mess there.

Also, if you are standing in Western Ave in front of the Deli, you’ll likely get run over, so don’t actually do this.

  • Edited version

Grotke’s guess (if correct) is clear and unambiguous.

The worst phrase of the town’s notice was: “to only allow traffic to exit Williams Street onto Western Avenue ON THIS SIDE of the Deli. ” THIS side?

[ignoring the split infinitive] Why not describe what is meant by “this” side, as Grotke has done, instead of challenging the reader to go back and reread the the previous sentence, trying to reconstruct which side is meant by “this” side? Let’s hope that the town proof-reads the new signage before posting it.

Grotke’s observation about the inherent difficulties of traffic there is spot-on. A thought experiment shows that there is no traffic pattern (other then making Williams Street one-way) which does not expose people to unusual risks.
