Dear Library Community,
The Library will be closed from 10 am until 12 Noon on Thursday, January 17th for a staff training.

Brattleboro is a book-reading and book-buying town. There are no less than five bookstores downtown with books available in other stores as well. There is an annual literary festival, every October. And there are more book venues scattered around the county from Putney to Newfane and on into Keene. Trump on the Couch
In 2005, Justin Frank, M.D., a psychiatrist , wrote a book “Bush on the Couch” in which he provided keen insights into the president’s mode of thinking-or not thinking.
Commenting on “W”, Dr. Frank noted we are “dealing with a potentially cornered man [who] could lash out, and it is possible that the best way would be to bomb Iran…. Whatever the root causes of Bush’s pathology, we have a dangerous man running things…grandiose and unchecked.”
Brooks Memorial Library Holiday Closures

We will be CLOSING EARLY on Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24th. Our hours will only be from 10 am – 12 pm, so make sure to stock up on reading material while you can!

Author Talk with Valerie Abrahamsen
Join us at Brooks Memorial Library at 7 pm on Tuesday, December 4th as Harvard-trained theologian Dr. Valerie Abrahamsen discusses her book Paranormal: A New Testament Scholar Looks at the Afterlife.
In her book, she examines four types of evidence for the survival of the individual soul after bodily death: scientific instruments and techniques, near-death experiences, reputable psychics and mediums, and out-of-body experiences. Dr. Abramson contends that not only is the afterlife a certainty beyond a reasonable doubt, but the evidence also points definitively to reincarnation, the law of cause and effect (karma), pre-birth decisions, our ability to communicate with those who have passed over, and the fact that our loved ones know what is going on in our lives.
Like-New Holiday Book Sale @ Brooks Memorial Library!
The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library will be holding the 13th Annual Like-New Holiday Books Sale from November 29th through December 1st!
Come on in and browse from the excellent selection of fiction, non-fiction, Kids books, CDs, and DVDs, and say hello to these hard-working library fundraisers 🙂 The Friends will be there from 10 am-6pm on Thursday and Friday, November 29th and 30th, and from 10 am-2pm on Saturday.
Can’t make it in then? No worries! the Book Sale is ongoing, and you may pay for your purchases at the Circulation Desk until we are closed.
There will ALSO be a holiday gift basket raffle ongoing until the drawing is held on December 16th. Tickets may be purchased at the Books Sale, or at the Circulation Desk any time we are open.

Happy Thanksgiving! Library Closing Early Wednesday, Closed on Thursday
Brooks Memorial Library will be CLOSING EARLY, at 6 pm on Wednesday, November 21st so that our staff can go home to prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. We will also be CLOSED on THURSDAY, November 22nd.

The Friends are ramping up for their Like-New Holiday Books Sale! Donations of Books, CDs and DVDs in good condition will be accepted at the Library circulation desk.
Book Reading and Discussion: Archer Mayor reads from Bury The Lead
Archer Mayor will read and discuss his new book “Bury The Lead”. Monday November 5th at 7 pm.
Dummerston Community Center, 150 West Street, West Dummerston, Vt. 05357. Free event, light refreshments will be served.
Books will be available for purchasing and for autographs.
Screwnomics is Topic of Talk at Everyone’s Books
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – The idea that women should always work for less or, even better, for free is the economic theory behind Screwnomics, the subject and title of a new book by Rickey Garde Diamond that she will discuss at Everyone’s Books Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
The event is co-sponsored by the book store and the Brattleboro branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
Volunteer at Lit Fest for Write Action and Get a Great Tee-Shirt
Write Action is a non-profit org which promotes writing and writers in this part of the world. During the literary festival we host both the Spotlight Reading, and the Open Reading. This year, both readings will be in the CCV atrium in the Brooks House on Saturday.
Free Book Talk with Mary Ann Hooper
Join us on Wednesday, September 12th at 7 pm in the Meeting Room for a book talk, as author Mary Ann Hooper will read and discuss her book Across America and Back: Retracing My Great-Grandparents’ Remarkable Journey, recently published by the University of Nevada Press.
Mary Ann grew up on Sunset Lake Road in Brattleboro. Her grandfather Howard C. Rice was publisher of the Brattleboro Reformer and her father John S. Hooper was editor and then publisher of the Reformer from 1950 to 1971.
Roundtable Discussion: Royall Tyler – 1700s Author, Wit, and Judge, of Early Brattleboro
Join us on Thursday, September 13th, at 7 pm as Marius B. Péladeau, Don McLean, Christina Gibbons , and Tom Ragle come together for a moderated panel discussion about Royall and Mary Tyler. This Roundtable discussion series is part of the Peoples, Places and the History of Words in Brattleboro Project.

Giant Book Sale
The Friends of the Moore Free Library invite you to their Annual Book Sale on Saturday, September 29 from 9 am to 4 pm. The giant sale takes place in the Union Hall, just off the Common in Newfane. Categories arefiction (including classics and a large selection of mysteries), history, biography and memoir, essays, nature, travel, art and music, how-to, health, young adult, philosophy and religion, cooking, gardening, humor, Vermont and New England, children’s literature, DVDs, CDs, and more!
