Saturday, August 3rd, the Brattleboro Farmers’ Market hosts free live music by the Zora Quartet, playing Bosnian music from 11am to 1pm. Also at market this week, local herbalist Heidy Adams leads a free educational wild and medicinal plant walk. Participants are asked to meet at 11am at the center kiosk of the market and will walk the market grounds.

The height of summer bounty is rolling in from local farms and growers! Tree-ripened peaches, blueberries and raspberries, juicy tomatoes and the first corn on the cob is available, along with fresh veggies of all shapes and sizes. Globe-spanning cuisine and gorgeous crafts are available at the market; there’s something for everyone! Picnic spots and children’s play area are open for enjoyment.

Twilight Music continues its 11th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 28 with southern Vermont based funk and world beat band Simba. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25. All concerts begin at 5:30 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Putney Food Co-Op, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Inn, Next Stage Arts Project, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations.  The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.

Irish-American folk music duo Young Ireland presents a musical celebration of Irish history and tradition at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Sunday, July 28 at 7:00 pm. All ages are welcome to share this evening of inspiring, original songs and storytelling. Partial proceeds from the concert benefit Brattleboro Area Hospice.

Honduran violinist Marissa Licata will perform with her World-Gypsy Fusion ensemble at the Hooker-Dunham Theater on Monday, July 29 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15 at the door – cash or checks only.

Featuring Licata and Ethan Wood on double violins, the performance will draw on influences from all over the world including EasternEuropean, Latin American, Middle Eastern and Americana. They are joined by Jim Guttmann on bass and Sergio Martinez on percussion.

The concert is presented by Cox Violins to coincide with the one-man show of Doug Cox’s work at David Walter’s Master Craft Gallery. Licata plays on a Cox instrument modeled after one belonging to her teacher, the late Eric Rosenblith of New England Conservatory.

“Hit It” percussion camp uses a two-pronged approach to help student percussionists develop the combination of performance and listening skills necessary to be successful.

One of the camp’s focuses is on “classical” percussion instruments such as timpani, snare drum, marimba, cymbals, tambourine and triangle – instruments on which percussionists need proficiency in most school music programs.  An equal focus will be placed on gaining skills and understanding on Cuban, Brazilian and African percussion instruments such as congas, bongos, cowbells, shekere, timbales and incorporating them into polyrhythmic patterns characteristic of traditional music’s of those countries.

Electric Fence returns to Pleasant Valley Brewing in Saxtons River, Friday night, June 28. Music starts at 8 p.m. Our good friend Alan Metcalfe will join us to blow some sweet harp. Twilight Music presents award-winning contemporary folk singer/songwriter Antje Duvekot at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Friday, June 28 at 7:30 pm. Vermont-based singer/songwriter Lizzy Mandell opens the show.

Antje Duvekot is a German-born, American-raised singer/songwriter whose songs have been critically praised for their hard-won wisdom, dark-eyed realism and street-smart romanticism. Her bicultural upbringing and relative newness to English have helped shape her unique way with a song, giving her a startlingly original poetic palette.

Sitting on my back porch, head still addled from this late season flu, I listen as the last chords of “Deacon Blues” fade away and permit myself a sardonic smile.

I am listening to Aja, Steely Dan’s mid 70s masterpiece, seven perfectly executed songs that manage to touch your soul while still exhibiting every iota of the “slick production” for which so many of us derided it when it came out.  But then as now, I ask myself, how can anyone resist the crystalline chords of “Aja” or Wayne Shorter’s heartrending sax solo… Of course, I’m biased.  Not only was I a huge Dan fan from Can’t Buy A Thrill on, but by the early 80s, I had the perfect system to play them on.

It is probably safe to say that the Fauré Requiem is one of the most popular and performed pieces of music in the entire choral literature. And for good reason: Fauré captured the essence of all that is beautiful and transporting in a format that is modest in size, but huge in concept. 

For the past several years, Friends of Music at Guilford, now in its 47th season, has been presenting an “A Cappella à la Carte” evening as the finale to its annual calendar. This year, the Guilford Chamber Singers are featured in “Melodies Steal Into My Heart,” the musical segment of this Saturday evening’s three-part menu. The setting is Guilford Community Church, just a short distance from Exit 1 off Interstate 91.

The festivities begin at 6 pm with a brief and merry Friends of Music membership meeting. Folks can sign up on the spot and participate in voting for the upcoming year’s board of trustees, as well as symbolically ratify the current board’s actions in the fiscal year just ending. Plans for the 48th annual season of concerts are shared with everyone present.

The Clash: Live in Tokyo 1982

An old-time gospel hour is planned in West Dummerston on Sunday June 9th, starting at 10:30 AM. The event, to be held at the Dummerston Community Center, will feature guitar and vocals by Gin Mill Bill. There will be no preacher, and no preaching! Light refreshments will be available. Donations will be accepted for the Community Center’s heating and maintenance fund.The Community Center is located at 150 West St. in West Dummerston village, just off Route 30. The music composed and performed by Eugene Uman, pianist and leader of the Convergence Project, achieves a difficult feat: it balances on an artistic tightrope between fresh, innovative and exploratory on one side, and accessible, understandable, exceedingly enjoyable and fun to listen to on the other. What keeps the project unified is the integrity of the compositions, the shared vision of the group’s members and the careful balance of jazz harmonies with Colombian rhythms.
